The Trump-Pence Weekly Newsletter, which is emailed to subscribers by their re-election campaign, reminded potential donors and voters of the president’s remarks Wednesday when he visited the city.

“Our nation is still in shock and mourning following the massacre of 58 concertgoers and hundreds of others injured in Las Vegas,” the email begins.

The newsletter then points out that Trump and first lady Melania Trump met with victims and thanked first responders and law enforcement, and then quoted the president’s “words of comfort and healing.”

“We know that your sorrow feels endless,” the email quotes. “We stand together to help you carry your pain.”

U.S. Sen. Chris Murphy is facing criticism for a fundraising solicitation he sent by email this week – days after the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history – that directed donations to three gun violence prevention organizations but also to his own re-election campaign.

In an email with the subject line “Outraged at Congressional inaction on guns?” Murphy urged supporters to “Split a donation – of any amount – between the leading organizations working every day to take on the gun lobby and make our communities safer from gun violence.”

When users clicked the link, they were taken to a page to make a contribution. By default, the money was split four ways: to Americans for Responsible Solutions, a political action committee co-founded by former U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords that helps elect candidates who support gun control; Everytown for Gun Safety, a gun violence prevention organization co-founded by former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg; the Brady campaign to Prevent Gun Violence and Murphy’s 2018 re-election campaign.
