In the 2000 film Scarlet Diva, a heavy-set Hollywood producer in a dressing gown lies on a bed and asks an aspiring actress for a massage, telling her he will read her script afterwards. “Don’t be afraid, I’m a teddy bear,” he says. Then he attempts to sexually assault her.

The film was based on the life of its director, the Italian film star Asia Argento. The scene depicting the fat, seedy producer was based directly on the time that Harvey Weinstein raped her, Argento has told The New Yorker.

Her claim formed part of an avalanche of graphic allegations of sexual assault and harassment that fell on the film mogul yesterday.

A-list Hollywood stars such as Gwyneth Paltrow and Angelina Jolie, leading actresses from France and Italy, others who dropped out of the entertainment business immediately after their encounter with Weinstein and a psychology professor who met Weinstein as a college student, all told similar stories of a man who sought to bully them into a sexually charged encounter and who would not take no for an answer.
