They should say "Ladies and gentlemen, our national anthem."
In that case, if you choose to stand then you're showing respect. But you stand because the announcer told you to then you're not showing respect for anything, except maybe for the announcer. All you're really doing is just following instructions.

(544 posts)I suspect if you're not elderly or disabled and fail to stand you're liable to catch an ass whooping at many statiumd across the nation.
Especially on dollar-draft-night.

(544 posts)The Cleveland Indians have (I think) $5 Pints before the game starts at The Bar in right field. It's always great fun to show up 2 hours early and drink "cheap" beer while watching the teams hit Batting Practice. Dollar Hotdogs every Friday at the Indians games too.

(1,301 posts)It was a brilliant protest that got the nations attention. Then the oppressors got involved and it became about respect. Then those on the protesters side fell for it and jumped into the "who is more patriotic" argument with both feet. For just about everyone, on the left and right, in business and out, it's all about the national anthem, respect, and who is more patriotic.
