What would account for that? Many DUers overseas? Lots and lots of night owls?

(51,308 posts)GD used to be much more active, with new threads every few minutes. Now it seems I can go away for a few days, come back, and the same threads are on the first page - even with less than 50 replies.
No idea why; I kind of miss the more active days.

(51,308 posts)I think the ugliness of the primary season turned a lot of people off the site too.

(16,876 posts)Im a night owl and with my work Im often up in till the early am hours a couple nights a week. Likewise, Im often up before dawn on others days. That being said, I do find it strange that its not unusual for me to be called to jury duty at odd hours.

(16,876 posts)Anecdotally it seems like theres much more night activity Monday through Friday, the weekends slow down significantly at night.

(101,361 posts)though you seem to be mainly concerned with the number and timing of recs, which isn't something I pay attention to. But in terms of posts made, no, it's quiet.
Depends on when you count as 'night', of course - after midnight Pacific time? Before 6am Eastern? That's only a 3 hour window.
For posts, it's fairly easy to count, if you look at the site at the start and end of a period. GD has the majority of posts (in the last 30 days, 117,626, compared to 23,688 in LBN, and 4,596 in Video; few groups are active these days). So, it'll be easiest just to look at the GD figures. For that, get the unique number assigned to the most recent post - look at the most recently updated thread in GD, and the latest post in it. The 'permalink' URL for that post ends "pid=9709645" while I compose this. Do the same a few hours later, subtract the old 'pid' from the new one, and you find out how many posts to GD were made in that period.

(8,311 posts)That actually could explain some things.
I do wish that there was a way to denote country of IP origin in posts for MIR team members. Along with blocking known proxies/TOR exit nodes (or flagging those IPs specifically if they want to keep access for people who might be trying to bypass censorship).
That might require more coding than Skinner can implement, though. And I am fairly sure he has a day job, and might even have... omg! a life... Even if he feels it's worth coding in, given the issues of hacking and compromise and bots, it wouldn't happen overnight.
Madam45for2923
(7,178 posts)Is that ok if I did that?
moriah
(8,311 posts)But they do a pretty good job, and Skinner may not want to potentially discourage expat Dems who vote, military Dems stationed overseas (they do exist), etc.

(34,137 posts)But recently in an effort to improve my sleep I have been shutting off my computer at midnight. I used to leave it on 24/7 and would be tempted to wake it up and check DU when I'd wake in the wee hours of the morning. Since it takes several minutes to boot I am not turning it on to simply check for updates at those times.

(6,120 posts)Postings on DU seem subjectively to be down from in the past, particularly in the midnight to 8am ET period. I have always had an erratic sleep pattern, plus foreign travel, so I have brief check-ins at all hours. I am comparing to non-campaign periods in the past. Activity was, of course, vastly greater last year.
I think the overall quality of the posts at DU is down from the past. Maybe its just me. I am so tired of OPs with titles like Wow! with just a link or a video with no context or summary; or with links to drive traffic to vanity blogs; or yet another attack on Bernie to stir all that again; or another OP in GD where opinions are dismissed if one is not black, not a woman, or whatever. DU has lost a lot of its feeling of community; I no longer recommend DU to others, though I still come here fairly often.
One thing that is more active is jury duty. Given how many juries I am on each day, I can only imagine how many there must be in total, almost all from attacks on Bernie and his supporters by the same few posters over and over again in threads I would not read otherwise.
