'Their values are cash and not Christ': Rev. Barber rains holy hell on right-wing Values Voters SummitBob Brigham 14 OCT 2017 AT 12:26 ET
Actually, from Jeremiah 22 to Jesus and Matthew 25, Christian values for nations and political leaders has to do with love and justice, equality, stopping exploitation of the vulnerable, caring for the poor, caring for children, welcoming immigrants, helping the sick and loving all, Rev. Barber preached.
And by these standards, the so-called Values Summit is not about Judeo-Christian values, its not about Christianity, but the values of a heretical rhetorical extremism funded by a whole lot of money, perpetrating a fraud on the American people.

(24,764 posts)It can be summed up in two quotes:
"You cannot serve God and mammon" - Christ
"You can serve the Almighty Dollar in the name of the Almighty" - RW fundie prosperity gospel heretics.

No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. You can't serve God and mammon.
They really do hate the Jesus of the New Testament

(15,222 posts)I worry about his safety. But I believe he is performing a great service to our country. We need to hear from real Christians like Bishop Barber, and not simply always hear from the idiots who take the tenets of Christianity and pervert those tenets to their own interests.

(82,849 posts)Why is it that the only black people I see on the electric teevee machine are folks like Ben Carson and Michael Steele? Why doesn't William Barber have some favored status? I know that the popular media like to trot out the Sheriff Clarke folks to exhibit the phenomenon of a self-hating black man who barks for the scraps from the white man's table, but Rev. Barber has a contrarian message, too: These Values Voters are all about horrible values that don't line up with the Bible they claim to revere.
Wouldn't that lead to a lively discussion, and attract viewers?

(36,828 posts)Political Christians rather than Christians of faith.
They support Trump who says he is so perfect that he does not need Christ or his forgiveness.
Like today's evangelical/religious right supporters, Trump is a Political Christian, not a Christian of faith.
Evangelicals/religious right are easily able to spin their beliefs for political expediency.
The Donald who does not have to ask Jesus for forgiveness.

Speaking the truth about these "values voters" hypocrites over and over again doesn't make it a lie.

(15,229 posts)the rich man is cast as personifying wickedness, violence, fraud, oppression, etc, while the poor man is cast, not as the feckless idle, no-good bum, but as the virtuous man, the True Israel. The Magnificat is a good example. Of course, there are many good rich people, but relatively less than among the poorer folk, and the symbolism is by no means inappropriate, being, as it is, a total inversion of the world's go-getting, 'aims of industry' values.
