(CNN)The Green Bay Packers are in a funk.
The Super Bowl hopes and dreams of pretty much the entire state of Wisconsin crashed into the turf along with Aaron Rodgers' shoulder after the star Packers QB was hurt in Sunday's game. He has a broken collarbone and may miss the rest of this season.
But Packers fan have the perfect replacement in mind -- Colin Kaepernick.
Tracey Corder, a Packers fan from California, started a change.org petition addressed to Green Bay, urging the team to sign Kaepernick.
"Aaron Rodgers is possibly out for the rest of the season but there's a Wisconsin-born QB who should be on our team!" the petition reads. "Lets makes sure the organization know we support Kaepernick to the Packers!"
It's been signed more than 10,000 times.

(7,286 posts)The only thing we can vote on is the members of the board of directors ( I went to high school with 2 members of the board)
The shareholders have absolutely no say in player or coaching decisions, and wisely so.
The shareholder thing is just a construct, no real voice or return. Something you hang on the wall in your packer-themed room.
mountain grammy
(26,653 posts)and yes, wise that shareholders have no say, but still cool. Don't you get to shovel the seats when it snows?
They don't need Kaepernick, Hundley looks ok. Hoping for the best. Bronco fan here, but always watch the Packers too.

(9,527 posts)Rodgers extends plays by moving in the pocket but he is still primarily a throwing quarterback who reads the field. Kaepernick is a running quarterback who can't read the field to save his life. If his first read isn't open, he takes off running.

(50,562 posts)We can debate Kaepernick's political stance all day long, but here's reality: the last full season he was under center, his team was God-awful.
mountain grammy
(26,653 posts)but he was a decent quarterback. He's better than quite a few playing now. I think you'd admit that.
ClarendonDem
(720 posts)Would not admit that he's a "decent" QB. He's at best a stop-gap in an emergency, and NFL teams aren't going to sign him on that basis.
mountain grammy
(26,653 posts)his stats were better than many playing today..just sayin... but agree, no NFL team will sign him.
ClarendonDem
(720 posts)And to clarify, he's a decent 2d string QB, but doubt too many NFL owners want to sign a decent 2d string QB with a lot of baggage

(4,033 posts)to read defenses. The word was that he was not a smart man/player. It was also his insistence that he stay as a quarterback that kept him out of the NFL
Lurker Deluxe
(1,038 posts)That is the same problem with Cap, tons of physical talent but he can not run a typical read offense. You have to build a different game for him ...
Cap makes one read, then takes off running, or makes a bad throw ... just like Tebow.
Or RGIII, why is he not playing? He is two years younger than Cap ... no one will sign him either. Same problems.

(7,286 posts)The coach has 2 players well versed in the system. One is hungry to succeed
KP doesn't fit into the Packers timing offense
They have already picked up a third quarterback
Ted Thompson is a money ball type manager, believes in building up from within the system and finding younger athletes of a certain mold, he doesn't go for veterans or splashy free agents for a quick fix, but long term goals. If the backups perform well he will trade them for draft picks. Every team wants experienced young QBs who have studied under Rodgers.

(42,641 posts)the best coach in football. And the organization has a history of great quarterbacks, and great draft choices, and free agent picks.
Starr, Favre, Rodgers. Three Hall of Fame quarterbacks.

(5,042 posts)You should tell this to people in Green Bay. This would be news to them.
McCarthy owes most of his success to having a great organization behind him and the best QB talent-wise in the NFL. I think he's a average coach.

(5,103 posts)You saved me a lot of typing.
I am an owner. Green Bay is not unless they own a share of Packer stock. As we both know, they are located in Ashwaubenon.
Most teams are so vanilla that you can plug in a Colin or Tony and it's good. Watch the Packers preseason and observe the similarities to Rogers displayed by Hundley and Callahan. You build on that and at least get a wild card. Hopefully better.
Bummed but not broken!
mountain grammy
(26,653 posts)sure gonna miss watching Rodgers.

(16,829 posts)Rodgers will be replaced by Brett Hundley, who stepped in on Sunday. The Packers promote from within and they have loyalty to the guys who have patiently waited for their opportunity to step up. They don't go shopping.
Its not just about replacing a quarterback, its about keeping a guy who knows their system and coaches and players. Its about being part of a team, and Hundley is on the team. He is the perfect replacement and will rise to the occasion.
I'm a Packer fan and I would not sign this petition.
Greybnk48
(10,176 posts)We don't "go shopping." Never have. From now until Rodgers comes back, it's Hundley and Callahan. I wouldn't sign the petition either, and I fully support Kaepernick and the Black NFL civil rights protesters.

(4,238 posts)What's the point of having a back-up QB if you're not going to use them when their time comes up? I don't know how Hundley will perform, none of us do, but he deserves the chance first, just as Rodgers did before him.

(1,823 posts)Agree with upthread fans - the Packers are a TEAM, first and foremost, and one of the things that made Rodgers the beast he is is the three years he spent learning alongside one of the all-time greats. Hundley will rise to the occasion.

(16,829 posts)And who knows how good Hundley could become. He's only 24 and he's certainly earned a chance to put his training under Rogers to good use.
Brother Buzz
(36,466 posts)Hundley from UCLA and Rodgers from Cal.
I had the fortune to watch both of them play back in Berkeley back in their respective days. Hundley ain't half bad if he can find his groove.

GREEN BAY, WI - SEPTEMBER 24:
MADISON, Wis. (CBS NEWS) - Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker says he thinks NFL players should stop protesting during the national anthem and instead speak out against domestic violence.
The Republican former presidential hopeful sent a letter Monday to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and Players Association Executive Director DeMaurice Smith saying he believes players are showing disrespect for the flag and veterans. Players should drop the "divisive political sideshow" and speak out against domestic violence instead, the governor wrote.
......................
"My request is simple: stand for the American flag and the national anthem out of respect for those who risk their lives for our freedoms, and then take a stand against domestic violence to keep American families safe," Walker wrote. "That's something we can all agree on, and that just might help the NFL reunite with many of its devoted fans."...........................
........Wisconsin state Rep. Melissa Sargent, a Madison Democrat, issued a statement accusing Walker of ignoring domestic violence within the NFL for years. She said Walker's letter is a political student designed to make himself feel relevant...........................

(11,257 posts)NFL teams start practicing and implementing their system in May. And because the Packers have one of the most stable rosters in the league, they've been working together for many years. You can't expect a QB to come in mid-season and pick it up, much less build chemistry with his teammates.
It's not going to happen, but it seems to me that he would be doomed to fail. And I'm guessing that a lot of NFL owners would love to see him fail so they can cite his performance on the field to rebut claims that they didn't sign him for political reasons.

(2,872 posts)It won't happen though.. he has been blackballed
For those of the non sport or football pursuasion, whenever anybody points to the teams record as a reason that he is no longer in the league.. know that they are either being disengenuis or naive and just repeating an easy talking point.. Quarterbacks have this thing called a QBR rating that is calculated with stats to show the a mor accurate measure of their worth.. if you watch enough pre-game or post game shows this stat will undoubtably be displayed whenever discussing quarterbacks..
Team sports (by their nature) require an over emphasis on "team rrecord" - understandably so from a fans rooting perspective.. but don't let that cloud the conversation when discussing individual stats & accomplishments.. last I looked Kaepernicks QBR at the end of 2016 was still better than half the STARTING quarterbacks in the leauge this year (might even be 11th) - that is among 32 teams.. so we haven't even taken into account all the backups that are holding clipboards that are obviously worse players - according to the team they are on, since they are not starting.. & Kaep has never ruled out coming in as a back up for a team..
Recap;
32 teams
90+ quarterbacks (including backups & 3rd stingers) - I won't even get into the junk players picked up thus far this year
2016 Kaepernick (which the team had already collapsed around him) 90+ QBR rating - still ranks among the top 15 STARTERS
Playoff & Superbowl experience & still in his "prime" years
You do the math.. yeah, it don't jive homey
Oh, and I am a Bears fan with no skin in the game as far as Kaepereck is concerned - nothing would make me smile more than the packers losing every game the rest of the way.. so theres that, and I do know what bad quarterbacking looks like.. trust me

(7,286 posts)If you were on a job, any job, a ship, a surgical crew, a logging operation, and your key guy or gal goes out....and you had his sub who has been inboard for 3 years understudying your co worker, and yourself too...had been thru all the training, all the exercises, all the meetings, knows the system...you would want someone cold who knows nothing about the way you and you crew works to take over?
2 things would come to mind: your hard work isn't respected by the boss either
And the risks of something going wrong are actually increased.
To your point the risk of injury increases with someone who does not know the ropes
