(2,805 posts)If you knew someone celebrated Christmas you wished them a Merry Christmas. If you weren't sure of someone's religion you wished them Happy Holidays. Like I said simple.
The Christian soldiers always seem to be looking for a fight. Chances are if they are in a store and are buying candy canes they very well may be wished a Merry Christmas whether an advertising sign says Happy Holidays or not. And what is wrong with being wished happy holidays, anyway? Seems like a nice enough sentiment to me.

(23,297 posts)letter once. Very angry and defiant. Made it sound like only since Obama was elected, people are afraid to say Merry Christmas. I pointed out that in a 1960 Christmas episode of Andy Griffith, at the end the camera pulls away to reveal a huge sign hung on the courthouse that says "Seasons Greetings".

(2,805 posts)When I was a kid, after wishing someone Merry Christmas and having them tell me they were Jewish, it was I who was embarrassed. That is where I learned not to assume anything and go with the more pluralistic greeting. We were always taught not to ever mention or question someone about their religion.
Talk about nothing better to worry about than Xmas versus Christmas. They must live a "blessed" life.

(23,297 posts)But 'X' was a designation for Christ. It was not derogatory. But then, that means nothing to Christian crazies.

(14,860 posts)that X is a designation for Christ. Really, how many people know that? Of course many people see it as just a convenient abbreviation.

(14,860 posts)Be nice and polite, I mean, but don't refer to any holidays when you're interacting with strangers. Not that that will necessarily get you left alone. As a store clerk in Texas, I had Christians complain that I didn't wish them Merry Christmas, when Christmas was weeks away yet.
I'd make one exception - if you KNOW you're talking to a War-on-Christmas fanatic, by all means say Happy Holidays. They enjoy feeling persecuted, so you'd be doing them a good deed.
