Players are not protesting the anthem. It's racial injustice.

The point is that kneeling makes spectators uncomfortable. It reminds them that something is terribly wrong with this country. Spectators don't like being uncomfortable, so they make up a false narrative to turn the protest against the protestors. Anything to keep from facing the ugly truth.
