(10,495 posts)Most victims lucky enough to have insurance are left to fight by themselves as the federal laws give them little protection.
As to the damn releases that flooded otherwise un-flooded homeowners, they failed to heed warning s to release ahead of the storm to reduce chances of flooding these poor people.
Homeland Security held drills every year for this and failed to take this into account just like they failed to ave a plan for nursing home evacuations.
The point of the cartoon is to let the victims face all of this alone. The insurance Lobby met with Texas legislators and Governor Greg Abbott last Spring and quietly passed a Windstorm insurance bill to screw future victims of hurricanes. The new law went into effect on September 1st, a few days after the disaster before people could file their claims.
The toon should have insurance companies, Lobbyists and the state telling the victim no! He would . ot have the money to be rebuilding if the toon was accurate!

(10,495 posts)to be able to help the victims in our county where we received 64" of rain from Harvey, an all time world record for a storm. Many of us are flood victims too!
What we learned is that FEMA flood aid is minimal at best, but the documentation and the wait in monumental.
TWIA, the Texas Windstorm Insurance Association was the beneficiary of all of the favorable rule changes last Spring that are going to demonstrate just how little coverage people have compared to what they thought they had, especially for the counties one county over from the coast.
Propaganda by powerful interests have been great at perpetuating lawyers as evil and crooked, not to be trusted. Granted we are human and not all of us live up to the deals of our profession, but the majority do just like in any other profession or trade.
The man in the cartoon was re-building his home so he has no need of attorneys. Show an example of the majority of the flood victims in stripped out homes begging for anyone to help them get the insurance company to pay, that is more realistic. What we learned in the seminar is that there is very little we will be able to do but to wade through the minefield of short time deadlines, appeals etc., to attempt to get them something to help start over.
Playing to false stereotypes is easy, actually learning what is going on to place blame where it belongs involves a little effort!

(2,143 posts)It's amazing that the cartoonists haven't let up or backed down, especially considering how exhausting the endless stream of crap in the news inundates us every single day.

(17,183 posts)his triple chin. In addition to his tiny hands making okeedokee signs, his freaky hair, his orange reverse-raccoon complexion, and his purdy perma-pursed lips, of course.
He's morphing into Jabba the President.
