"Reporters have stopped hounding Trump to turn over his tax returns, which amounts to a victory for the president"SNIP
Monday was the deadline for President Trump to file his 2016 federal tax return. Ordinarily, a president would make the document public. Trump did not, which is unsurprising.
What is notable is that the media forgot to ask.
Among dozens of questions posed to Trump during an impromptu news conference in the Rose Garden on Monday were several about tax policy but none about his own filings, which were, at one time, hotly pursued by the media.
That Trump was spared a single inquiry about his tax return, for which he had received a filing extension, is a testament to his highly effective burial of the issue. He has stalled or refused to release tax documents so many times that the pressure is off.
While propagating his birther conspiracy theory about President Barack Obama and mulling over a White House bid in 2011, Trump told ABC: I may tie my tax returns I'd love to give my tax returns I may tie my tax returns into Obama's birth certificate.
You know what happened. Obama released his birth certificate; Trump held on to his tax returns.
If I decide to run for office, I'll produce my tax returns, absolutely, Trump said in an interview on Irish television in 2014. I would love to do that.
In January 2016, when he was running for office, Trump told NBC that we're working on that right now. I have very big returns, as you know, and I have everything all approved and beautiful, and we'll be working on that over the next period of time. . . . At the appropriate time, you'll be very satisfied.

(7,178 posts)That said, however, plenty of other details about his tax situation would be revealed, such as:
How much income he made: The top two pages of his federal Form 1040 would reveal Trump's income from general sources (salary, business income, investment income, rental income, etc.)
What he claimed in deductions: Trump's return would indicate how much he claimed in itemized deductions. More specifically on Schedule A and Form 8283, he would report how much money he donated to charity and which charities he chose.
His charitable giving is an area he bragged about during the campaign, even though a Pulitzer Prize-winning Washington Post report did not find proof in most instances of the donations Trump said he made.
How much he paid in taxes: The president has often bragged about paying as little tax as possible while at the same time boasting of his great wealth. That's raised concerns that the tax code may allow some of the very richest Americans to pay very little.
Whether and where he has foreign bank accounts: On Schedule B and related Form 8938, the public would learn what foreign accounts and trusts Trump has and in which countries.
Whether he paid taxes to foreign governments: If Trump claims a foreign tax credit, that means he paid tax to a foreign government and that would be subtracted from his U.S. income tax liability. On Form 1116 he'd have to reveal the countries where he paid those taxes and the type of income on which those taxes were due.
His businesses' profits and losses: Schedule C would detail the profits, losses and expenses of Trump's individual business entities. Schedule K would show his or his entities' share of profits, losses and liabilities in the various partnerships in which Trump has a stake. That same schedule would also list the locations of those partnerships.
Also, on those forms he must declare whether he "materially participated" in a given business. In cases where he did, he could really reduce his tax bill because he'd be allowed to use losses from that business to offset taxable profits from other businesses or investments, said tax lawyer Steven Rosenthal, a senior fellow at the Tax Policy Center.
Whether he'd benefit from his own tax reform proposals: The Trump administration has indicated it is working on a new tax reform plan. If and when that new plan is ever released, having the president's more recent tax returns would offer a good indication of whether he'd benefit from his own proposals.

(7,178 posts)Third, Americans actually do care about his tax returns. Democrats and Republicans by substantial majorities think he needs to release them. This will be one more item along with conflicts of interest, filling his Cabinet with Goldman Sachs alumni, violating the emoluments clause that Democrats will use in the 2018 midterms. The argument is simple: Trump is more secretive, more indifferent to corruption than his predecessors and Republicans are too meek and unprincipled to object. Trump's conduct cries out for divided government; without it, his contempt for clean, transparent government grows with each passing year.
Fourth, at some point in the investigation into the Trump team's association with Russians, either the intelligence community or members of the House or Senate intelligence committees likely will want access to the tax returns and/or other financial records. After all, how can investigators determine the extent of ties between the Trump campaign and the Russians without examining financial records (up to and including tax returns) of the candidate? It's hard to make the case that those records wouldn't be relevant to determining what connections, if any, existed. Depending on what information the intelligence community has already gathered, Trump's financial records may become critical to determining the Trump family associations with the Russians. If Democrats have control of one House, he could well face a subpoena. In any event, continuing to stonewall requests for such evidence will be interpreted by many voters as evidence of illicit conduct.

(54,410 posts)Trump will still refuse, but nothing is stopping the media from asking for his tax return. Tell them a copy of Obama's long form birth certificate is stapled to it. That should speed up their inquiries to warp speed.

(10,721 posts)Because we know damn well that Republicans would if the situation was reversed, and eventually the Democrat would give in and show his or her returns.
Since I don't have a TV or pay much attention to the MSM, I honestly don't know if Democratic elected officials continue to demand (every time they are on the air) that Trump show his tax returns. Are they?
