And who would not be proud to have this stylish wall stretching across their landscape?

(12,660 posts)It's tall enough to require some sort of bracing to be able to last more than 10 years (think Gothic Cathedrals and Flying Buttresses...). We aren't talking about a 10 - 15 ft. wall here. Wall Depth requirements for stabilization add up logarithmically the taller a structure get if there's no bracing to divert the weight of the structure. And if they used lighter materials or building processes like honeycombing the concrete structure to offset the weight for the height, they still need to add to the structural wall depth to ensure someone can't drive an 18-wheeler doing 75 through it - perhaps up to 4/5 feet for a 30ft high wall.
How much of a footing does it require? 10 ft or so on either side? May be okay in flatlands, but along the mountain terrain, that would be problematic to say the least.
Try putting something like that up in the large arroyos and passes that litter the border, especially at the higher altitudes - could it stand up to a strong Santana wind ripping through at 70 - 90 mph?
I can't see this wall being built except around urban areas or in the farming/delta regions that are already well patrolled, which makes it little more than a symbolic package for a yet another useless political boondoggle.
It certainly doesn't seem to be sustainable in the areas where the current smuggling routes are along the border.

(16,104 posts)The proto-types were deliberately cordoned off so no US protests would be possible in sight of 'the walls.'
