On Monday morning, because the Donald Trump presidency is an extended, unsparing exercise in creatively inflicting various degrees of casual cruelty on Americans everywhere, Myeshia Johnson—whose husband, 25-year-old U.S. Army Sgt. La David Johnson, was killed in combat in Niger several weeks ago—had to go on national television to confirm that President Trump, while purportedly calling her to offer his condolences, had neglected to even learn her late husband's name first.

Each day that the president does something new to keep this story in the headlines lays bare some previously unimaginable level of human tragedy.

During the bleakest hours of Myeshia Johnson's life, her husband's commander-in-chief responded by first ignoring her, and then insulting her, and, now, attacking her character in front of the entire world. His steadfast refusal to offer an apology and—for once in his life—to let something go is his cruelest stunt of all, for he has robbed her of the opportunity to mourn her fallen husband privately, at her own pace, and in peace.
