Everything he did as President remains in place, pending the actions of a future President.

If Trump resigns or is removed, Pence becomes President. No do-overs. No next-highest votes wins.

In addition to the comments above, the time to review and examine the election results passed and the election was declared legitimate. Despite the millions of us who clearly saw and decried the election manipulation, those complaints were ignored. End of story.

Having said that, I don't see any reason why a firebrand opposition candidate couldn't run on a platform of prosecuting every overlooked Republican malfeasance and reversing 38 disastrous years of New Gilded Age policy. Like the Bush Administration, these clowns are on the hook for high crimes with no statute of limitations.

I would argue that such a thing has already quietly happened in U.S. history. In the wake of World War II, Harry Truman deliberately kept the books open on countless violations of the Logan Act, billions in corrupt defense contractor deeds, and even an attempted fascist overthrow of the U.S. government. He used that leverage to jack up top tier income taxes and set the stage for thirty years of Democratically-controlled Congresses.

And if played correctly, the pendulum can be swung pretty far left for a very long time.

Republicans will make sure there's an hour in between to make sure there's enough time to appoint and confirm a new veep, who will then become president, as Gerald ford did.

Why would the President Pro Tempore, fourth in line of succession, take office instead of Paul Ryan, Speaker of the House, which is third behind the VP?

I think Ryan's whole schtick for the past two years has been to put himself in position to inherit the White House. Do you foresee something that would prevent Ryan from succeeding to the Presidency?

It looks to me as if Ryan has tried to stay as far away from all that as possible. I suppose that could be because he's red-handed, but another reason could be that he knew exactly what was going on, duly reported it, and sat back to let events unfold.

If Ryan can knock out Pence and Trump at the same time, that's it, the White House is his. He might even be able to sweet talk a President Pence into appointing him VP, before the other shoe drops.

But honestly, I've seen enough of this crap going back to Saint Ronnie to know that the Republicans at the top always, always, ALWAYS get away with it. Every damned one of them is a post-Watergate Richard Nixon who learned from his mistakes.

I'd like to think that the Trumpkins, being generally unaware of, well... everything, aren't sly enough to protect themselves as the Bush coup did, but that might not matter because the rest of the GOP might find it necessary to protect them in order to protect themselves.

My gut says that nobody important is going down for this. Fortunately, I still listen to my brain before I listen to the contents of my lower intestine.

It's just standard line of succession at that point. No constitutional crises.

There is a clear constitutionally outlined line of succession that doesn't involve a special election.
