BY JULIA AINSLEY, CAROL E. LEE AND KEN DILANIAN
WASHINGTON Federal investigators have gathered enough evidence to bring charges in their investigation of President Donald Trump's former national security adviser and his son as part of the probe into Russia's intervention in the 2016 election, according to multiple sources familiar with the investigation.
Michael T. Flynn, who was fired after just 24 days on the job, was one of the first Trump associates to come under scrutiny in the federal probe now led by Special Counsel Robert Mueller into possible collusion between Moscow and the Trump campaign.
Mueller is applying renewed pressure on Flynn following his indictment of Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort, three sources familiar with the investigation told NBC News.

Turkish experts will tell you that discussion of the "deep state" flourishes in a climate of conspiracy and political polarization. It encourages the public to doubt the pillars of civil society from the judiciary to the press and take shelter in the shadow of a populist leader. That's where the parallels to American politics in the age of Trump start to become all too real.

The FBI told Manafort when they were searching his condo that he should expect to be indicted; it was Manafort's people who leaked that. I imagine the FBI issued a similar heads up to Flynn and Flynn Jr. recently, and it is the Flynn camp leaking it.
The Flynn camp is probably trying to figure out if Trump would pardon both Flynn and Flynn Jr., so they can decide whether to flip or not. By leaking this, they may get a reassuring message from Trump, like the "stay strong" message he sent Flynn Sr. a while back. Trump has yet to send such a message about Flynn Jr., that I am aware of, so I imagine the Flynn camp is particularly nervous about Flynn Jr.

It seems to mean that both could get reduced sentences if Flynn flips. I think, though, that the offenses are too serious to let either walk. Just my opinion, though.

(15,286 posts)an immunity deal when he was asked to testify before the House Intel Cmte. I don't see why that would change now. This also puts Manafort in spot because now he'll have to decide if wants to cooperate or let Flynn beat him to it.

Probably a reduced sentence. The charges seem to be too serious for complete immunity. Flynn has to take what he can get and be grateful for it.

(15,286 posts)plead gulity to at least 1 charge ala Papadopoulos. Mueller et al alternatively might drop or reduce the charges against the son.

(10,828 posts)When it comes to Mueller and his team, they have played everything close to the vest. Which means something like this leaking (assuming the leak is accurate) would be well planned for its timeliness and effect. Could be a last chance offer for Flynn and his son or it could be a smack at those claiming the whole investigation is a nothingburger.
Strange, too, that Mike Flynn Jr was recently tweeting a broadcast taunt to his detractors, claiming he would never be arrested. It was something of a 'catch me if you can' line. On the other hand, there are rumors out there that Mike Flynn has already flipped. So, the leak could be an effort to pull back those suspicions until Mueller and his team have interviewed and investigated the entire spider web of those involved and/or implicated.
I suspect that there are few things Mueller et al do accidentally.

(14,167 posts)I think Flynn (the elder) did via his counsel, in order to communicate a message to Trump (since he obviously can't directly speak with him). Flynn is angling for a pardon for himself and his son or he's going to deal with Mueller and rat out Trump & co.
Go back to when Comey was still FBI director. Trump was doing his best to get him to back off Flynn. Flynn can implicate him in criminal activity.

(3,613 posts)Sources said that General Flynn did indeed discuss this offense, which was admitted, with FBI agents. However, they reported that after a brief period, a senior official entered the room and confronted General Flynn with knowledge of his wider conspiracy in Russias interference in the election. An outline of a case for espionage, a capital crime, where the default penalty is death, was made to Flynn senior, involving both himself and his son Mike Flynn Jr. While sources were not specific, they reported that the conversation involved both mens knowing propagation, and co-ordination, with the Kremlin, of Russian propaganda, using an Artificial Intelligence data weapon precisely to target that propaganda on social media. This technology and the way it was employed is also said to feature in an espionage investigation that is ongoing against Bob Mercer, sources say.
