Joy Ann Reid unleashes 42 tweets about the 'rigged' DNCthat all sides may want to read

The media is massively promoting the news of a “rigged” 2016 DNC and Democratic primary election. Perhaps it’s to break up their continuous 24/7 news loop of Donald Trump, or perhaps it’s something else. Either way, on Thursday the MSNBC news anchor and reporter Joy Ann Reid has decided share her informative thoughts about the issue—through 42 consecutive tweets:

A small note - that’s actually a big one - on the subject of “rigging...”
_______

The @donnabrazile excerpt is causing lots of sturm und drang w @SenWarrenjoining the chorus saying it proves the ‘16 Dem race was “rigged”
_____
in favor of Hillary Clinron. But I think we need to take a deep breath and unpack what’s at issue.
_____
The question is: what does the DNC actually do, and can it, even if it wanted to, rig 50+ primaries for any given candidate?
_____
Well let’s start with what the DNC (and RNC) actually do: they are the governing bodies for their parties. They write the platform…
_____
support candidates up and down ballot, fund state parties and operate what’s called the “coordinated campaign” for the presidential nominee.
_____
They do NOT determine whether states have primaries or caucuses — that’s up to the states and state parties:

Most state parties prefer primaries because the state pays for them, while parties preferring caucuses do so for more control.
_____
Other than using their delegate allocation power to lock in the “go first” states, the DNC also doesn’t set primary/caucus schedule.
_____
That too is up to states, who generally pass laws to fix the date leaving it to the state party (not the DNC/RNC) if thwy’re open or closed.
_____
That’s why we already know the order for 2020. States for the most part already decided:

...snip

The Democratic Party has no discernable message, no recognizable plan and no real response to Trump’s serial rending of basic decency and honor. While individual party members soar, particularly in their dogged investigation of Russiagate, the party writ large has yet to find consensus on whether to pledge to impeach this president should they gain power, or to somehow make common cause with a man many Americans believe is quite literally descending into madness.

If the kind of bad management Brazile exposed in her book is still de rigueur for the DNC, best to fix it now, before 2018 becomes the graveyard of a party that already controls almost no levers of power in a country where Democrats have outnumbered Republicans for more than 70 years.

One could choose to view Brazile’s bombshell as a further destabilization of the party at a delicate time, or as a warning. Her revelations could be taken an excuse for the far left to abandon the party on the eve of two important gubernatorial races, or as an incentive for those who care about the party’s future, and the country’s, to right the ship.

The barbarians are at the gate and the gate has fallen. Perhaps it is time to torch the huts and seek higher ground for the fight.

Thanks for the link. That the DNC was a mess is not really in dispute. It was broke!

Reid's description of what the DNC actually does is very useful. hence the Kos headline.

I see a lot of confusion about that both on DU and elsewhere. So to Reid.

As an aside, Not sure of timeline on these pieces, but we do know now that Donna seems to have confused a primary agreement w a GE agreement.

"Turns out the memo Donna spoke about applied only to the general election. If so then this memo is standard operating procedure for 15 years"

I have been pushing back on shit like that a couple three times today. Donna is who she says she is, in no way is she a Putin bot.

Donna also bore the brunt of Putin's bullshit 'rigged' meme. Has written about it eloquently elsewhere.

Will get a link if I can find it again. Oh here:

http://time.com/4705515/donna-brazile-russia-emails-clinton/

"When I was asked last July to step in temporarily as D.N.C. Chair, I knew things were amiss. The D.N.C. had been hacked, and thousands of staff emails and documents were plastered on various websites. Staff were harassed, morale suffered, and we lost weeks of planning. Donors were harassed, and fundraising fell off.

Snip

By stealing all the DNC’s emails and then selectively releasing those few, the Russians made it look like I was in the tank for Secretary Clinton. Despite the strong, public support I received from top Sanders campaign aides in the wake of those leaks, the media narrative played out just as the Russians had hoped, leaving Sanders supporters understandably angry and sowing division in our ranks.

In reality, not only was I not playing favorites, the more competitive and heated the primary got, the harder D.N.C. staff worked to be scrupulously fair and beyond reproach. In all the months the Russians monitored the D.N.C.’s email, they found just a handful of inappropriate emails, with no sign of anyone taking action to disadvantage the Sanders campaign."
