Russia invested $1B in Facebook...how deep does this go?

The files show that in 2011, VTB funded a $191m investment in Twitter. About the same time, Gazprom Investholding financed an opaque offshore company, which in turn funded a vehicle that held $1bn-worth of Facebook shares.

But I don't really understand what they would stand to gain beyond straightforward investment.

It's huge money but it is a tiny fraction of the market cap of those companies. They would not be able to exert any significant influence over them.
