You know why these sick bastards do this? It's because they've learned that the media will make sure NOBODY forgets their name and the story of their life. Just look at that Paddock guy who shot up Vegas. The media are still running stories on him and trying to figure out why he did it. That's EXACTLY what he wanted in all likelihood. He was a random loser nobody with gambling problems, and now he'll go down in history as one of the most infamous murderers in our nation. Suddenly everybody is examining his life and trying to learn everything they can about him. Same for Lanza, Holmes, Cho, Rodgers, and all the other sickos who do this. Seems like most of the people who do this are just losers who just want their name to be remembered for something, and the media give them their wish. This has all turned into some sick 'game' where these losers try to outdo the others and get the new 'high score'.

(268,998 posts)Just like this one he had access to high powered weapons and as many magazines with as many rounds as possible.
Fuck the NRA and fuck every politician who continues to promote this slaughter and then tell me to pray.
Fuck the fucking funs.

(2,955 posts)Just that they shouldn't focus so much on the perps. These guys want to make some kind of statement, or they're just sad losers who want to be remembered for something.

(43,182 posts)We have a right to know how these people got their guns and what warning signs were missed. The more we learn now, the greater the chance someone catches the warning signal before something similar happens somewhere else.
Sweeping it under the rug isnt going to do anything.

(13,081 posts)Too many to remember at this point.
I do remember the most common denominator: easy access to ridiculous weapons.

(13,485 posts)It's become entertainment of an ugly sort. I think it's a little broad to blame media alone. If people didn't crave the information, the politicizing or the machinations of the alt world it would have less media intrigue.
It's one of those things where the perp should not be publicized or the act catagorized as if it's a contest.
I support people's right to know but people make the decisions of what entertains them, they choose what links to support by their mindless clicks.
We have to be more mindful of our own empowering acts.

(51,593 posts)shootings grows along with it. Today super fast, personal info via tech spread the word to a lot more people. 100 years ago there were shootings but the pony express, telegrams, newspapers were slow in getting the word out.
The difference between then and now is that that people actually want to own high powered weapons that 100 years ago were used only in wars, not to "protect your home" with. Therefore more people have much too powerful guns that kill a lot more people and kill them faster than ever possible in our country's history.
It is the availability of high powered guns, money buying politicians votes, and the macho man/testosterone fueled attitude that makes this happen and not the media's fault.

(I hope I don't need the sarcasm thingy here.)

(13,390 posts)The thing that should not be ignored when thinking about motive is the fact regardless of why, it is easy and there is no outside mechanism that might divert impulsiveness. Even if you are correct that fame is the primary motivator, making it a little more difficult for them to make that dream come true could go a long way towards diverting the impulse for the actual act.

I blame the gun humpers on the LEFT who fight tooth and nail against sensible gun legislation.
