I know someone might jump in here and correct me about the way things really ARE, but I am mainly talking about how things FEEL.
I'm pushing age 60. I cannot recall seeing so much fucked up shit on the news in such rapid succession. You never know what it is going to be next. Take 911 for example. A story would come on the news about 911 shortly after the event. Your mind would say...oh, here's a story about 911, and you would wrap your head around what happened and at least try to understand it.
Now, you have mass shootings happening every 5 minutes, Jared destroying the Middle East because he probably pulled some shady shit, Trump waving his dick at NK and keeping us on edge about being vaporized, chants of "lock her up", adults believing false facebook memes that a 7 year old could disprove, sinister Russian characters with names you can't pronounce ruining your dinner, people afraid to step away from their TVs lest they miss the end of the world.
Oh, and the shootings...we have a guy bringing the entire Gander Mountain ammunition inventory into their hotel room and shooting down on concert crowds. Oh, and fucking Nazis with Walmart torches are marching in the streets and plowing people down with their cars.
Oh wait...Paul Manafort and Jeff Sessions. Can't forget those fuckers.

(2,679 posts)But I agree with you. It is so nuts. The outrageous thing that will happen tomorrow will feel like normal before the day is over. It's insane.

(17,426 posts)and effects will be felt for decades, and I didn't even think to include them as examples in my post. And that is my worry also...all these tragedies will become normal.
Never had one day of worry like this under President Obama. I'm not saying that there were not many problems, but you knew he would do his best to handle them, and that he would be thoughtful in any response he gave.
Now, we have a 13 year old on a bad acid trip in charge...

(2,679 posts)He did good. He will be remembered has a great President. This orange white house squatter.... well he makes W seem like a not so bad President. Which is nuts has W was a war criminal and lets see, oh, the housing meltdown, the banking crash, 911, enron crash, Katrina on his watch, oh and the whole manner of his election, both times to be honest were rather shady at best. I personally couldn't imagine have the two worst leaders in one life time. But it happened. the orange one is however far worse then W. And that can not be a good thing to anyone.

And if you have time, an auto accident that tragically kills a certain New Yorker fighting his own personal Vietnam would not make me upset at all either...

I am sick and do not have many years left, but I hope to Hell that I see the moron and GOP self combust before I die so I will have a smile on my lips and peace in my heart. I do not want to live in a world that is so damaged and is only getting worse and definitely wouldn't want my children to have to endure this non stop BS.

(63,849 posts)president a position which everyone held in high esteem until we were compromised and the dumbing down of Americans. We have a dick as fake president who will be meeting with Putin and doesn't give a crap what Americans think. Probably getting their high 5's in. Putin is in charge do not be fooled. I feel like doing this And Americans getting picked off by white guys and ISIS sympathizers.

(989 posts)is the 24 hour news cycle. When you look at your phone---shit happening, when you log online---more shit happening, not to mention the cable news and entertainment networks. I want to take a long walk in the woods where my cell phone has no service!
I lived in Alaska in the 1970's. There were no satellites--so the news was recorded in Seattle and flown up to Alaska to be broadcast the next day. We always joked that we would find out the world ended the next day....I'm up for that right now!

(17,426 posts)I went for a 6 mile walk at the park. I was the only one there. Got soaked right down through my underwear and the water was squishing in my shoes. Glasses fogged up. It felt great!
So then I get back to the car, dry off the best I could with some paper towels, and check my phone. First thing I see is a notification about the shooting. I'm thinking of ditching my phone.
I agree with you...I could do with less drama on the news right now.
This is why I refuse to be attached to a smartphone. I have a Tracfone and it's for emergencies only. I check in with DU for my news and even here I pick and choose what I'm going to read and how much of it. I'm almost 69 and don't need the added stress. I no longer suffer under the delusion that I have any control over the way this country is headed.
I watched a documentary last night that just made me weep for this country. It was titled "A Place at the Table" about hunger in America. Now, I don't cry that easily but I just couldn't stop weeping for the children that go hungry, the single mothers trying so desperately to keep it all together and then the politicians caring only for the wealthy elite. The history of how we spiralled downward from the 1970's once Reagan was elected really hit home for me, since I remember that time clearly. So much of this gap is due to his policies and the Republican party. It sickens me to death. On the one hand I want to bury my head in the sand and live out the rest of my days in peace, but on the other hand I want to take to the streets and do whatever it takes to throw all these scumbag Republicans out on the streets, if not in jail. I am so angry and what has happened to this country.

(21,646 posts)eventually most folks will know about it by tomorrow. It should be brought to attention as it is a mass killing and those are becoming monthly , weekly etc. events, not rare
I am disgusted but I wouldn't want to not ever know it occurred .
Turn off alerts on your phone is an option . I don't need to know everything as it instantly occurs that I agree with.

(1,151 posts)and I was on the verge of dropping them because my reception at home was so bad (in the middle of a huge metropolis). But in Alaska, in the middle of a beautiful hike in the woods several miles from town, my phone rings. I picked up out of curiosity and the reception was crystal clear.

(7,522 posts)and I bet there are a few on here who remember the Depression and WWII. Things have been really bad before, our democracy and economy were threatened in the 30s and 40s with people's lives were ruined in the depression and millions died during WWII. But we were mostly united I believe as a people. We were divided as a country in the 60s with riots, murders of civil rights workers, assassinations and, of course Vietnam with thousands of Americans and millions of Vietnamese dying. So we are not at those points of misery - yet.
As amoral and compromised as the repubs are, I somehow find it hard to believe that they would let this country go down the tubes over a piece of shit like dump. But if it works for them in some politically expedient way that also serves their corporate masters they will. If it comes to that and/or war then this time may rank with those other troubled times but it's not there yet.

(2,565 posts)It's more than I remember happening at one time, and I keep wondering if I was just ignorant before or if it really has escalated. It's the first time I have felt like we have lost total control of our democracy--that is different.
I see people saying that the guy who beat Rand Paul is a registered Democrat and I think, "Really? Or is he one of Putin's guys." Like Putin is going to find an orthopedist in Bowling Green, KY and turn him into a troll. But this is how crazy it's become. "Did he pay Donna Brazile to pull the party down right before the VA elections?" Highly unlikely--but I'm wondering these things! Russia + Saudi Arabia--did I miss a chapter or is there a link?
I have way too much faith in Mr. Mueller as a savior. He's human. I need to remember that--but he and his ace team are giving me the faith to carry on.
Whew. Thanks for letting me vent. We will survive. I HOPE!!!
