General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region Forumswe are not just the democratic party. we are now the democracy party.
we are at a critical point in the history of our politics, and quite possibly, of our government.
whatever your view of the parties may have been in the past is no longer relevant.
the republican party has transformed itself into the party of dictatorship.
they no longer believe in the democracy or in maintaining the necessary conditions to keep democracy alive.
they believe the truth is whatever they say is the truth. we see this with science, we see it with scandals.
they believe in locking up innocent political opponents and pardoning guilty political allies instead of the rule of law.
they believe in suppressing votes and gerrymandering them to their party's advantage over the will of the people.
they believe in making up numbers to support their positions and fabricating scandals to destroy the opposition.
to fight this, we should position ourselves as the keepers of democracy. harken back to the words and intent of the founders and support the institutions they created while they are under attack from people who believe instead in the power of party and money over the power of democracy and of the republican our founders created.
we are the democracy party!
if they object, great! let's shift the debate to whether their positions or our positions support democracy or dictatorship.
and hey, they have a nickname, the "grand old party". fine, now we have one, too.
*the democracy party*.

i think this reframing accomplishes several things. first, it motivates people as it makes your vote huge -- are you choosing democracy or dictatorship.
second, it gets away from making it about individual people. i know what you're thinking, why not make it about individual people when donnie's so unpopular. ok, he is unpopular, but they can keep making it about hillary or someone else and scandalize them. they're very good at smearing and creating outrage and disgust. but that doesn't work when the issue is as big as democracy vs. dictatorship. in any event, we can't pretend the fight is over once donnie goes. the republican party is way worse than just having one bad apple.
third, it instantly conveys several major issues -- voting rights, disenfranchisement, voting machine security, russian interference, etc.
we are the democracy party!!

(411 posts)It's short, inclusive, patriotic, easy to understand ... it's even a little 'in-your-face-republicans' ... and we really do need to bring the fight to them this time. Really let 'em have it.

(411 posts)... in that slimy way news-talk hosts have of implying that we don't stand for anything anymore, our reps can retort, 'DEMOCRACY!'
The Democracy Party. Honestly unblock, I hope this catches on.

(7,522 posts)I believe we are in an existential fight for democracy against criminal thugs like putin and dump and the ruling oligarchs they serve and are a part of. The hacking of our election was just one battle in this fight. Since the repubs are aligning with those thugs and always served the ruling elite it is up to Democrats to stand up for democracy like our ancestors did in WWII.
