Looks like Carter turned the Page on them

https://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/carter-page-russia-testimony_us_5a01159be4b066c2c039cb79
<snip>
The House Intelligence Committee on Monday released more than 200 pages of testimony from its closed-door interview last week with Carter Page, a former foreign policy adviser to the Donald Trump presidential campaign.

The document presents the clearest picture yet of Page’s interactions with Russian officials, including his interactions with Russian Deputy Prime Minister Arkady Dvorkovich. Page’s testimony appears to contradict his public statements that he had no meaningful encounters during a trip he took to Russia in 2016 while he was a member of the Trump campaign’s foreign policy team.

Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), the ranking member of the committee, said Monday evening that Page was “forced to acknowledge that he communicated with high-level Russian officials while in Moscow” during his trip, noting that Page “also admitted notifying the fact of his meetings to his campaign supervisors.”

“Perhaps most important, Page ― after being presented with an email he sent to his campaign supervisors, and which he did not disclose to the Committee prior to the interview and despite a subpoena from the Committee ― detailed his meetings with Russian government officials and others, and said that they provided him with insights and outreach that he was interested in sharing with the campaign,” Schiff said in a statement following the transcript’s release. “Page’s invitation to Moscow and his July 2016 trip was paid for by Russian sponsors and followed his appointment as a Trump campaign foreign policy advisor.”

and it's apparent that the guy is an odd duck, to put it mildly. His testimony was slippery, evasive and inconsistent, and full of references to how he is being persecuted by the media and the government, complete with death threats. He tried to portray himself as important and learned while at the same time claiming he didn't do anything significant with the Trump campaign and especially involving the Russians. I think he's another useful idiot (like Papadopoulos) the Russians saw they could exploit by fluffing his sense of self-importance. The Trump campaign hadn't much use for him, either, except as a name on a list. All the reputable foreign policy advisors were already taken by other campaigns and wanted nothing to do with Trump, so they were scrambling for people they could call experts - and they got this numpty. Of course, like the waitress in Lawyers, Guns and Money, he was with the Russians, too.

(since he was otherwise useless) through his connections to Russian government officials. He probably exaggerated those contacts since the Russians evidently saw that he was a moron, if a useful one - but of course the point is that the campaign bit. They were interested in what Page claimed to offer; otherwise they'd have kicked him off the campaign and called the FBI.
