They will not let go. In ways some of them don't even know how to give voice to, race drives every argument.

really is.

It should have been very clear with who occupies the WH now, a racist, bigot, and a sexist, so none of this should come as a great surprise.

Here's hoping that our better angels prevent our descent into depravity

It should never have gotten close. In the June primaries, 543,000+ votes were cast in the Democratic primary, which Northam won over Bernie-backed Tom Periello by almost 12 points.

Over on the repub side, only 366,000 votes were cast in a bitterly divided primary that Gillespie won by less than 5,000 votes. Gillespie got 84,000 fewer votes than the losing Democratic primary candidate.

But while the repubs have come together, in part because Gillespie sucked up to the Trump-ites with racist, fear mongering ads, Northam and the Democrats have not presented a picture of unity, particularly as of late. And Northam's television advertising was dreadful.

I'm not giving up hope, and yes, if Gillespie wins it will reflect people responding to his Trump-ish appeals. But Northam didn't fight back effectively at all.

lying, dog-whistle, racist clearly anti-American campaign like Gillespie and trump ran. With facts? With policy ? There are people who want to believe what these assholes are spreading and you can run the best campaign ever and still never win them over. The devils they have been told to fear including and especially the big bad government are the enemy and those like trump and his mini-me Gillespie will release them from all the bad deals they are suffering from. They now will be rich and successful because all those who's fault it is they are not will be gone making Amercia great again.

While I still think their ad campaign was weak, I didn't give enough credit to the amazing work done by thousands of volunteers supporting Democrats at the most local as well as statewide level. They did a brilliant job getting out the vote.

This is true on both sides. It's likely the woman is conservative or leans conservative on a lot of other issues too, so I'd wager it didn't really change her vote. It's just what she's been thinking about lately because it's been in the news.

there are folks in Virginia that still are in love with the myth of the old South -- they're still taught it in school.

I know, I've lived in Virginia for over 60 years.

Why didn't McAuliffe just take them down like they did in New Orleans? Was it beyond his reach?

They had the polling #s to suggest it could be a winning strategy.

I just hope there is enough of a firewall and decent people to overcome the racists that Trump has and continues to cultivate.
