We must not go overboard with the win that came yesterday. Hours before we were trembling that just maybe the Republicans would pull out another upset. The reality is that Democrats came out. Note that Gillespie got more votes than the last Republican winner I believe even if you account for population growth though I have not verified that factually.
That said, Trump is at a low point and the population is on edge. Democrats cannot just offer Republican lite or Progressive lite going forward. We've done that for north of thirty years. We got a reprieve last night that will give those of us that are activist the example to show others that their vote can count. But we will have to have codified the policies Americans say they want which are decidedly Progressive but ant-Establishment Democratic or Republican. We have to break out of the Establishment Left & Right rails and really move forward.
Check out some of my articles on this and give me your thoughts.

Last night, we secured the beachhead.
There are a few more skirmishes this year, then it's full-on forward to 2018.

(7,143 posts)That right there is some sophisticated journalism!
Ralph Northam Democrat 1,405,041 53.9%
Ed Gillespie Republican 1,173,326 45.0%
Clifford Hyra Libertarian 30,241 1.2%
2013:
Terry McAuliffe Democrat 1,069,789 47.8%
Ken Cuccinelli Republican 1,013,354 45.2%
Robert Sarvis Libertarian 146,084 6.5%
Yes, Gillespie garnered more votes than Cuccinelli, but a smaller percentage of the total.
Can you figure out why? Please answer without a click-bait link.

(53,075 posts)Abandon civil rights, deprioritize reproductive rights. Focus on white men. Understand how oppressed they are. Abandon "identity politics," meaning the concerns of the non-white male majority, in favor of the economic interests of a demographic that already has far more than the majority of Democratic voters.
BTW, Elizabeth Warren's approval ratings are in the 30s. That according to the same polls proclaiming "Bernie the most popular politician in America," numbers some 15 points lower than Clinton's before she entered the 2016 primary. No video "proves most Americans are progressives." That is a function of self-identification. All the exit polls yesterday showed a majority of voters identify themselves as moderate. Linking to your own repetition of the same opinion is not factual, but then this argument isn't about fact and evidence. It's about power and privilege.
