(54,437 posts)It was a big ego-trip organized by a grandstanding journalist exploiting romantic popular (but not a majority-style popular) sentiment that was a legitimate beef during the Franco era, when the Catalan language and culture was suppressed. Puigdemont didn't even include all of Catalonia, just the four "officially designated" provinces. He apparently didn't even give a rat's ass about other Catalan-speaking areas of Spain, such as Valencia or Mallorca and the other Balearic islands--either that, or he just accepted the Fascist-era propaganda that they weren't Catalan-speaking in the first place, just because Franco said so (they are, anyway).
I used to live in Barcelona once upon a time. I go back there several times a year and speak Catalan (they even tell me I have a slight Mallorcan accent, don't ask me why or how). I have seen the demonstrations, but I don't personally know anyone there who is pro-separation. My friends there all call the whole thing a "boigeria." In Spanish that would be "tontería," or foolishness.
