would get you ridden out of town on a rail if you were an adult and it became known. Apparently, in some parts of this country, you can get elected to the U.S. Senate for the same thing.

(7,530 posts)I've read that the process of "tarring and feathering" was not just done for humiliation purposes. Tar must be boiled to become a liquid. The recipient usually sustained massive burns over large portions of the head and body. The feathers, while providing a sense of ridicule, also provided more pain - if the feather-ee survived, peeling of the feathers with their sharp quills proved an irritant to skin that was already likely blistered and sloughing off.
If you've ever been sore after a bike ride with an uncomfortable seat, you might begin to imagine what horror occurs to a man riding a rail carried by other men who aren't inclined to provide a gentle ride.
