Salt Lake City jogger stabs man who groped her during morning run

Then she chased him down the street.

By Paighten Harkins
·

A woman jogging Friday morning in Salt Lake City fought back against a man who came up behind her and groped her.

She was attacked about 6 a.m. in a neighborhood near 1700 South and 500 East, Salt Lake City police spokesman Greg Wilking said.

The woman was carrying a small knife in her hand and stabbed the man multiple times when he grabbed her.

After he was stabbed, the man turned and ran toward a nearby bus stop, and the woman chased after him, Wilking said. He then fled toward Park Street.

“She gave chase for a little bit, and then decided to go back home and make the report to police,” Wilking said.

... and didn't catch him and KEEP stabbing ...

So I think especially in Salt Lake any jury would acquit.

Well, if the jogger looks like a typical person from SLC at least.

That was a fear for a friend who had to fire in a mixture of self-defense/defense of another/stopping a violent felony in progress. She was a lesbian who had crossed the county line from her residence to the country to help a coworker leave a DV situation.

Her home county wouldn't have held her orientation against her, but was far less gun-friendly. The county that had jurisdiction unless she requested a change of venue was very gun friendly and certainly believed women should be allowed to defend themselves or have someone else defend them if they're getting dragged out of the window of a car by a person who has already beat the crap out of them multiple times on record. They might not say much if they saw a wife getting abused ("If she's letting it happen since she hasn't left, not my business" attitude), but they'd certainly support a woman trying to *leave* DV.

Even if the country jury didn't like lesbians, they certainly did believe any 5'1 woman should be able to shoot a guy much bigger than them if they feel in danger. And if nothing else the prosecution's weak argument that she could have just let him drag the wife out of the car so self defense didn't apply meant she could put the wife on the stand. *She* looked properly helpless, was able to show records of the multiple times the asshole had beaten her, and express gratitude and fear of what would have happened to her if her friend had abandoned her to that.

She was acquitted.

- They may not be legal where you are
- They require you to be within melee range of an attacker, when you want to have as much distance between you and the attacker as possible.
- The blades aren’t long enough. I saw a video where one took effort to and barely scratched a watermelon.
- They require you to swing or move your arms, meaning that the attacker can grab them and take hold of you. If you’re female, you’re slower and physically weaker than men. Once he’s got you, the device may be useless anyways.
- The point is to get away, not inflict damage. Inflicting damage should be done with the goal of getting away.
- They scratch, which is next to useless in a self-defense situation. You’ll just make the attacker more angry. I would rather be alive than be dead and have an attacker’s DNA all over my defense weapon (assuming the attacker is dumb enough to leave it there)
- They give someone (especially female with a male attacker) the sense of having more power in a life or death situation than they really do
- They need to be set up (make a fist to shoot claws out) when there’s so little time to think and act. The attacker will be right on you in the blink of an eye if you weren’t ambushed already.
- Most men can overpower you. You need to do anything to get away. Go for the groin and the sensitive areas. Trying to scratch your attacker requires too much precision. Getting away and to safety is the most important thing.

IMO, they’re little more than novelty items that will get people killed more than they’ll help. Opt for mace instead, imo. Just my personal opinion.

Mace has some distance capacity, but bad wind and you're screwed.

It's not much, but I keep wasp spray in my car. Won't help except perhaps if I'm approached getting in/out of my car, haven't found a can that fits in my purse, but it's completely legal and has range if I'm able to grab it and get out. It's not likely to be something someone would think to use against me if they were waiting on me in the car, either, unlike a tire iron, etc.

I mean, it's not ideal, but I'd rather have mace than stubby spikes that barely go above your knuckles. At least you have a chance in that case. Tiger Lady seems to be more gimmick than practical, imo.

- The spray may backfire on you. I've seen video where the person using it sprayed themselves.
- They require you to swing or move your arms, meaning that the attacker can grab them and take hold of you. If you’re female, you’re slower and physically weaker than men. Once he’s got you, the device may be useless anyways.

- They need to be set up (undo a safety catch and then aim) when there’s so little time to think and act. The attacker will be right on you in the blink of an eye if you weren’t ambushed already.

- Some mace sprays have a longer range (though the wind or style of spray may affect that). You don’t NEED to be in melee range.
- You don’t need to touch someone with the mace container for it to work. It’s still a ranged defense weapon (unlike the Tiger Lady).
- Mace gives you more distance because it is ranged, so you *could* get away and avoid a physical confrontation (situation depending). Tiger Lady doesn’t give you that luxury. I acknowledge that the wind is a major factor.
- Mace is not “useless.” I know you copied + pasted, but that’s simply untrue. The attacker will become angry, but also temporarily blinded (given a good shot). Tiger Lady leaves all of the senses intact, with only the possible pain of a flesh wound in the event of a direct hit.
- I won’t disagree that mace can also make someone feel safer than they are, but my gripe is with the concept of Tiger Lady in any way slowing down or stunning your attacker. It probably won’t.
- My mace has a fireman’s top. Just point and shoot. No setup required.
- The last point is true in all situations, and is exactly why you shouldn’t rely on just Tiger Lady or just mace. Mace, however, may give you more of an edge by temporarily depriving your attacker of sight.

when he grabbed her and tried to force her into the woods. She beat him so bad he ended up in the hospital for several days. She got him help. Called the police, asked them to send an ambulance as well. She felt bad about hurting another human that way - even one that intended her harm. She said she was pissed off that someone would interrupt her peaceful time of day by trying to hurt her and "lost it". She said the more she thought of what he was intending to do, the harder and longer she hit and kicked.

The man had attacked other women in the same park over the summer. The police were watching the park but the woods around the park are thick with multiple ways in and out. Multiple routes of escape.

All of us hoped we could do the same.

The man wanted to press charges against her, saying she misunderstood his intentions and attacked for no reason. He wanted to talk, he said. Not rape her. She had bruising finger marks on her arms where he grabbed and yanked her to the woods.

20. Reminds me a little of: Kelly "Not today, motherfucker" Herron:
Wed Nov 15, 2017, 02:38 PM

Seattle jogger Kelly Herron was four miles into her run when she stopped in a public restroom for a break. As she told ABC News, “As I was drying my hands I became aware that something was wrong,” and turned around to see a man who had been hiding in one of the stalls. “He immediately took me down to the ground, hit both my knees and legs, and then it was a fight on the bathroom floor and I just kept screaming, ‘not today motherf****r,’” which she referred to as a sort of “battle cry.”

During the attack, it occurred to her “this doesn’t have to be a fair fight,” which is when her self-defense training kicked into gear. “All those little things that I learned in my life … how to punch and everything came back to me,” she told ABC. “I started to feel like I was going to lose consciousness … but I got another surge of adrenaline and I reached for the door and was able to get out.” In the class she took just three weeks before, “I learned, hit with hard bones to soft fleshy places so I just started hitting the side of his head.”

and just about anyone else who do not look at me, a middle aged white male. After all: who's doing the overwhelmingly most of the rape, molesting, beating ... etc but people who look just like me in demographic if not in general appearance?

I make a point of keeping a respectful distance and not be overly "interested".

Its not their fault but it is the fault of men who look like me directly and indirectly by other men who look like me who joke and diminish the legitimate claims of crime and objectification by those who do not look like me.

Diversity is LONG past overdue and the establishments of our system need to accept that fact. I will give extra and more positive consideration to the "otherness" of two candidates being otherwise equal if one of them looks just like me.

Trumps group photos of his cabinet and legislators he works closely works with in his machinations only prove it more than necessary.

I give much more credence to the victims of men who look just like me then to those men who feel its their right to victimize anyone who doesn't look like them.

Bless all women, children, PoC, ethnic groups who resist being objectified and violated by men who look like me or anyone else who feels entitled to take advantage of others. Bless all the victims.
