Pokémon GO caused hundreds of deaths, increased crashes
Playing augmented reality while driving in the real world cost billions, say boffins

Pokémon GO killed at least two people and spiked rates of car accidents and injuries, according to a study of the game's impact on just one United States city.

“Death by Pokémon GO” (PDF), by a pair of researchers from Purdue University's Krannert School of Management, says the game caused “a disproportionate increase in vehicular crashes and associated vehicular damage, personal injuries, and fatalities in the vicinity of locations, called PokéStops, where users can play the game while driving.”

The researchers drew that conclusion after analysing “nearly 12,000 detailed police accident reports for Tippecanoe County, Indiana, over the period of March 1, 2015, through November 30, 2016.” That date range spans more than a year of normal conditions on the County's roads, plus nearly five months of data from Pokémon GO's July 6th, 2016 debut. All accident reports offered time, date, location, value of damage, plus reports on injuries or deaths.

I used to drive my kids around, and the PokéStops were a magnet for all kinds of people driving while playing.

I'm aware of the Pokemon Go thing, but have never had any awareness of anyone actually looking for those things, or stopping for them.

(I need to re-examine that rock I've been living under)

It's my incentive for my daily walk. Playing while driving, IMHO, is cheating - you're supposed to get out and walk to all those Pokestops.

People who are going to drive while distracted don't seem to need an excuse - playing a game, checking your Facebook feed, anything will do.

Trying to spin for hubby when we're driving slow through town or the park, so he won't try to do it while driving. But if they're going to pick on PG, than they ought to look into Ingress as well. Same type of game, but many more portals, and you're expected to cover larger areas.
