His opening bid is "No deal". The democratic opening bid is "a deal".
His plan was that the Democrats would make concessions to make him switch from "No deal" to "a deal".
It's a classic Trump-strategy: Give me what I want or I'll take my money elsewhere.
Except that this time Trump is in no position to take his money elsewhere. He needs this deal. He needs it desperately. It's the Democrats who are free to walk away.
He's really the best negotiator.

(46,114 posts)I believe Trump would have had the meeting with Chuck, Nancy, Mitch, and Paul -- and then issued misstatements (likely lies) about what Chuck and Nancy "agreed" to. By controlling their message(s), Trump would have sabotaged their leadership within their own parties, let alone negotiations generally.
By not showing up, Trump never had a chance to promote his agenda by using Schumer and Pelosi.
