(102,285 posts)that he died at the hand of Hindu extremists--assassins among his own people-- who felt he was too sympathetic to the Muslim minority in 1948 post partition India. I visited his memorial site years ago and the ironies of our current world situation are nearly overwhelming...
Sorry to be a bummer this morning, but I am genuinely worried, having seen Trump's retweet of horrendous racist conspiracy material from a British anti-Muslim extremest group this morning-- so bad that even pro-Trump Piers Morgan responded with disgust.

(47,953 posts)Look at the Roman Empire. Or the Middle East. Or his own India. Hate and fear rule the day. And show no signs of being replaced.

(102,285 posts)the pendulum always swings ... and on balance, Ghandi was and is right. Despite periodic contradictions, we humans throughout history have made and will continue to make "progress" on balance. Two steps forward, one step back. Unfortunately, lives and sometimes whole generations suffer or are lost during the disparate interludes. I do believe we are experiencing one of those now.
Hope and reminders. We need them daily.

(4,033 posts)I am not at all convinced that the the human race, as we know it, is going to survive. Between global warming, that seems to have shot past the tipping point, the fact that we have not one but two madmen ruling countries with nuclear weapon capability, and the fact that here in the US our government has decided that the whole '...of the people, by the people, and for the people' thing is just so much BS and instead we need to become a third world oligarchy, I figure the human race is pretty much finished.
