"Supergirl" and "Crisis on Earth-X"

I am not a big fan of shows with lots of biff, bam, knockem-sockem action but have become a dedicated watcher of "SuperGirl." First I like the protraying of strong women, not just those with super powers and the interaction of the characters. They are multi racial, multi gender and more then terrestrial beings good and bad with all sorts in between. They have not shied away from lots of controversial topics which can be extrapolated to our political realities.

The "Crisis on Earth-X" pulled out all stops. The main thing is that real heroes stand together against NAZIs. In the mulitverse one Earth X the NAZIs won and wanted to take over other worlds. Lots of biff, bam, knockem-sockem action but it was well worth watching 4 hours including commercials over 2 days.

Are the writers of these shows playing to the sentiments of young people. I am 67 so am a bit removed. My generation knew that the NAZIs were ever the enemy- it appalls me that so many of a similar age have forgotten what our Dad's fought and lots died for.

and look forward to the other three hours. I am a Supergirl devotee and need to catch up on Flash. I never got into the other shows and Arrow must have 8 or 9 seasons by now but I might sit down and stream them at some point.

it's a bit darker than the others, but that's because Oliver doesn't have superpowers to bail himself out.

They're on Season 6 now. Seasons 1 and 2 are very good and Season 3 was also up there. Seasons 4 and 5 were a bit weaker.

I like that the CW portrays all sorts of interracial relationships like it's completely normal that black Iris and white Barry are together and her father Joe West loves them both, and Wally West(Kid Flash) had a white girlfriend (Jessie Wells?) or that the city police chief is gay and has a husband...

4. Flash is the gayest show on TV when it comes to cast

Simply amazing to see that genre embrace gayness to the extent it has. Supergirl isn't a slouch in that regard either but not up to the Flash's standards.

beyond acting - a lot of them are Broadway veterans who can also sing and dance - Grant Gustin was memorable as bad guy Sebastian on Glee and Jesse L Martin (Joe West) was one of the original cast members of the musical Rent. Victor Garber (the now late Martin Stein on the show) is going to be returning to Broadway in January for a role opposite Bernadette Peters in Hello Dolly (who is replacing the soon departing Better Midler as the lead)... not to mention Melissa Benoist and Jeremy Jordan on Supergirl.

the musical crossover was amazing. I knew Jessie Martin, Victor Garber, and Grant Gustin could sing but had no idea that Melissa Benoist could.

Calista Flockhart even mentioned it early on in Supergirl when it was still on CBS in a quip as Cat Grant - something about her staff being good looking and diverse enough for a CW show

That said, I'm a straight guy and often shake my head when somebody says this guy or that guy is good looking. But, with Stephen Amell, I can understand why he's considered very good looking.

Earth X was created back in 1973. While it is timely and a smart choice to make for a show (and we've had a few of these in the last few years, man in the high castle being the most notable), it's also important to remember that this was put together in comics form that it's based on almost fifty years ago.

Multiversity/Mastermen A storyline where Superman as a baby crashes into Nazi Germany - thus allowing them to win WW2.

Also notable because the resistance included Phantom Lady (who is Jewish), Ray (who is Gay), Black Condor (who is Black) and Doll Man and Doll Woman (who are Jehova's witnesses). Anyway - I run hot and cold on that issue; but it certainly made me think so that is good.

Also the comic opens with a shot of Hitler on the toilet.

11. LOVED IT!! (Spoilers)

We watch all four shows, so a cross-over event is always awesome. If I have a bone to pick, it is this: while on Earth-X, despite having obvious Nazis, they never explicitly call out things which should have been called out, such as the heroes ending up on Earth-X in a "camp". Usually, when a new location is on screen, unseen before, there is a tag telling the viewer where they are. It should have read: Earth-X: Nazi Concentration Camp (though I flipped when I saw "Arbeit Macht Frei" on the gate, as I just had been to Dachau and Auschwitz two months ago). Also, when Jax asked Ray what his pink triangle stood for, he replied: "For loving the wrong person". He should have said "Because I am gay!" I also disliked they glossed over the fact there are Jewish characters on the show and their obvious revulsions to going to a world where Nazis won, though the scene with Earth-X Felicity wearing the yellow Star of David was a welcomed touch. Also, when Earth-1 Felicity stood up to the evil Green Arrow (the new Führer) and said her grandparents didn't' survive the Holocaust for her to now not stand against Nazis was good, but fell too late in the narrative, IMO.

It was AWESOME seeing two men ACTUALLY kiss on TV...multiple times!!! Both actors are also gay. Barry Allen's comment to Oliver Queen, upon seeing him in a tux; "Dammmnnn!" was funny as hell! All the shows are OK about showing gay and lesbian characters, though, gay men get the short end of the stick. I also loved the "Black Lightning" commercials, and can't wait for that show to come on in the spring.

Sad to see "Grey" go.
