When all we got were socks and underwear?
I hope Mueller has the good gifts hidden in the attic

(4,617 posts)...will be he gets close, Sessions steps down, Trump appoints a patsy for acting Attorney General, the new Attorney General fires Mueller before anything gets too close to Trump, and the Republican congress does nothing.
The question is, what do *we* do about that?
If the answer is nothing or little, then stick a fork in us, we're done.

Mueller is expecting to be fired and has a series of dominoes ready to fall when it happens

(22,037 posts)This isn't his first rodeo and his decades of government service will have informed him. Here is a believable idea that has been mentioned here and elsewhere.
Mr. Mueller knows that Trump wants to fire him and shut down the investigation. It's just short of miraculous that that hasn't happened! When the indictments against Manafort and Gates were unsealed, (along with the guilty plea by Papadopolous), it was noted that there appeared to be a number of other indictments that remained under seal. It's not hard to speculate who those charges might be against and the inner circle of TrumpWorld probably don't sleep well.
So here's a possible insurance policy: If Trump himself has been indicted as part of a conspiracy, Mr. Mueller cannot be fired by the Executive Branch because it would be obstruction of justice. Therefore, the theory goes, if Trump tries to fire Mr. Mueller, then the special counsel goes to a judge and unseals the indictments resulting in Mr. Mueller keeping his job.
I'd like to think that Bob Mueller and his team are quite a bit smarter than the miscreants around Trump. I don't think Trump will get away this time.

(4,218 posts)It looks like they've shared evidence and findings so at least maybe he can get some of the Trump family.

(22,037 posts)It's pretty clear from the A-list group that Mr. Mueller has assembled, that TrumpWorld is in for some big-time hurt, hopefully in many different ways. As you wrote, the NYS Attorney General has his own investigations that are outside of Trump's control. I wouldn't be the least surprised if Mr. Mueller had a couple of more levers available for his protection.

(36,470 posts)And if they don't? And why should they? They've obstructed & changed the rules & nothing is done to them, except they get more power. My non-political friends, who were outraged in Jan & Feb, have tuned out, due to outrage fatigue. I think they'll vote in 2018, but I'll bet there will be a few who won't. We lost momentum. There isn't a single, cohesive force for resistance, or we would have had monthly follow up marches to the woman's & science marches & yesterday when I was calling GOP senators about the tax bill, the lines would have been busy & difficult to get through. It's exactly this attitude that got us here. People who don't pay attention to politics because it's boring, or it doesn't affect them, or it's too contentious.

(4,221 posts)legislation that would limit or regulate these kinds of things happening again in the future. Meaning, they do the investigation NOT for the purposes of criminal investigation or indictment of individuals or groups (that is just a side effect), but to inform the body about what laws and crosschecks are needed to prevent this in the future.
The committees not doing either one well (investigation or prevention) in my view. But at least if we take the House in 2018, there would be a small chance of getting a public report and of getting some legislation to the floor in one of the Houses.
