News outlets split on whether to attend Trump's party

In the wake of CNN's decision to boycott the White House Christmas party, other journalists express mixed feelings.

By JASON SCHWARTZ and GENEVIEVE GLATSKY 11/29/2017 12:34 PM EST

n the wake of CNN’s decision to boycott the annual White House Christmas party for media, opinion on the event was split among other reporters: some told POLITICO they would attend, while others expressed reservations over mingling with members of an administration that so consistently attacks the press.

So far, no major news outlets, surveyed by POLITICO, have said they would join CNN in keeping its reporters and editors from attending. A Washington Post spokesperson said, “The Post staff invited by the White House are planning to attend.”

Several reporters who had been invited to the reception in the past told POLITICO that they had been excluded this year, raising questions about how the White House made its list and whether it was playing favorites and adding to the sense that the event has become fraught with politics. But many reporters stressed that they wanted to attend in order to maintain a normal sense of decorum. Peter Baker, the chief White House correspondent for The New York Times, said he was invited and plans to attend. If the occasion arises, he said he would take a picture with the president.

"It’s not our job to be bothered. It’s our job to do our job. Every president to a greater or lesser degree is unhappy with the coverage, and has an adversarial relationship of sorts with the people who cover him every day, so that goes with the territory. This one happens to be more vocal about it,” he said.

Most people with brains know the origins of Fox and their "Fair and balanced" routine.

15. It's an analog, yet you seem very persistent in pushing that Politco is seen as left wing

while saying everyone knows Fox News.

I see the disparity in your views as interesting.

Why the persistence in calling Politico left wing, when anyone with a brain knows Politico's bias?

one was a 35 + year long friend whose husband works for the Dept of Corrections and carried the pro-Trump/anti-Hillary BS from prison guards home for dinner table conversation. My friend and his husband are a gay couple. The other friends, a married heterosexual couple, went anti-Hillary/pro-Trump based on what Lisa was hearing at...the Sheriff's Dept where she works. Ugh, Ugh, Ugh! And I live in Massachusetts! Some days I just think, "WTH?" Makes me crazy

What a laughable notion, given the depths to which this administration has sunk. trump and his henchmen are working 24/7 to kneecap the First Amendment, and yet prominent members of the media still want to socialize? As if polite socializing is going to make things better? Fuck that.

7. The reporters who attend are abetting Trump's attacks on a free press

Th battle lines have been drawn starkly by Trump. Any reporter who attends the party is complicit in supporting Trump's damage to the Bill of Rights.

This line from the article jumps out:

"But many reporters stressed that they wanted to attend in order to maintain a normal sense of decorum."

What stupidity! Trump hasn't maintained any sense of decorum since forever! How dare the "reporters" pretend otherwise and normalize Trump's un-American behavior?!

The NY Times' Peter Baker should grow a spine. This isn't about the unhappiness of press coverage; it's about destroying the public's faith in the Fourth Estate. Mr. Baker needs to study a little history before he goes off to have his picture taken with Trump. Hey, Peter. How's that picture gonna look a few years from now?
