The GOP is probably convinced that the vote in 2018 is already fixed. Non supportive voters will be either dead or will not be allowed to vote. They would not be so crass. The 2016 election was a test. Ironclad victories are still just around the corner.
The voting anomaly that gave Democrats victory will be fixed soon.

(10,602 posts)Voter suppression and other tricks probably cost Hillary the election. I am sure that GOP operatives are working very hard at plugging holes or putting obstacles to voting. I am sure they are looking at what happened recently and are working at making sure it does not happen again.
When Obama won twice it was obvious where he got his support. And voter suppression tactics were designed and aimed at making sure that element could not vote.
Remember many younger generation Americans probably change their housing and addresses a lot. So if you have to go through so much hassle to vote you do not get it done. And if you are old or disabled or a minority getting documentation can be very difficult. Plus many states, particularly red ones, have conflicting ambiguous requirements.

(17,984 posts)There must be a hell of a lot of involvement at grassroots level, volunteers going door to door, providing transportation for voters, etc. I am anxious about next year, too. Heck, I'm in CO where our dumbass sec of state was all too happy to provide voter info to Kobach's "commission". It makes me queasy thinking of what tricks they might pull in the next twelve months.

(10,602 posts)However, the data is there and they have a lot of funding and secrecy to design against what happened in the mid terms. Gerrymandering is a huge factor. Plus they are no trying to play with the Census. moving forward.
Now the one hope is that some of their own will turn against them. But you cannot count on that. Their advantage is having so much control in red state and inroads into some blue state. They also have the media and massive hate radio. Some areas only get Rush, Hannity and the rest 24/7.
Sure money cannot win it all as we have just proven, but who would have thought Trump would win? Moore will probably win, though no guaranteed. Right now he is up in the polls again.

(6,377 posts)You act as if Republicans can only win if they cheat. Obviously stuff like gerrymandering and voter suppression helps, but there are some places, like Alabama, where it's so red that even when the playing field is even, the Republicans still have a clear advantage just because of who lives there.

(3,011 posts)the hate and ignorance. That should account for the "who lives there" part.

New Jersey - I don't know if they used paper ballots. But they had a big helping hand from Chris Christie who was such a terrible governor the voters couldn't get rid of him fast enough. I think the New Jersey voters wish they could have a do-over vote from 2012.
