The GOP Tax Cuts Are Even More Unpopular Than Past Tax Hikes

Senate Republicans’ effort to pass tax reform is at a crucial juncture. As some senators waffle on whether to support the bill, they may want to spare a glance toward public opinion: Poll after poll shows that more voters than not are opposed to their efforts. In fact, the GOP bill is one of the least popular tax plans since Ronald Reagan’s day.

About a third of voters currently support the Republican tax reform package, according to an average of five surveys released1 this month. In a Quinnipiac University survey, just 25 percent of voters approved of the plan. Surveys from ABC News/Washington Post, CNN, Morning Consult and YouGov put approval of the plan slightly higher, but all are still at 36 percent or lower. Meanwhile, an average of the five polls puts opposition at 46 percent.

Why is support so low? Americans are opposed to the bill because they think it disproportionately benefits the rich. (It likely will.) President Trump’s administration has argued, however, that there were similar complaints about the Reagan tax cut plan of 1981, which preceded an economic boom.

The Reagan plan, though, was far more popular in 1981 than the current Republican plan is now. In a Gallup survey taken in the days after Reagan signed his tax cuts into law on Aug. 13, 1981, 51 percent of Americans were in favor of it. Just 26 percent of Americans were opposed. The other major tax cut of the Reagan administration (signed in 1986) wasn’t nearly as popular, but it was still more popular than the current GOP legislation. A CBS News/New York Times survey conducted in the days after the bill passed Congress found 38 percent in favor and 34 percent opposed.

Indeed, major tax cut plans are usually more popular than unpopular. Heck, even some tax hikes have been more popular than the current GOP bill.

elections in which their primary 6-figure donors will have seen a significant windfall.

Democrats will really need to have our shit together to win anything. unfortunately, this does not seem to be happening. yet. perhaps it's for the best - gives the opposition less time to attack our strengths, assuming we have any.

Their one and all. Their wet dream. Their donors' wet dream. No donors...no re-election. If they pass it, they get lots of $$$ from the donors and a chance at re-election. If they don't, they don't get the money. W/o the money, they don't have much of a shot of getting re-elected.

as possible. I live in a blue city and state but I am spreading the word to get up and do SOMETHING. I told my family's guests at Thanksgiving, my neighbors, my doctor's office staff, the grocery store cashier, etc. And I have been calling every day 7-9 of them. I spread the word on DU too. I do not DO social media so I have to get the word out any way I can. I have worn the same "lock him up" earrings and the crazy prez pin that I made every single time I go out in public since the election. We have to do this...if only to be able to stand up and proudly say, "I called, wrote, protested, etc" and feel a sense of duty and patriotism.

Who have you called or written in the Senate and how did
it go? I get a lot of busy signals, "leave a message", mailbox full and sometimes an actual person. This is a good sign for us. Keep doing the good work...karma will come around.

Here is a list of who to call, how to get addresses, phone numbers, a nd a link about the Tax Scam. There are scripts to read when you call as well as a list of protest events in your home zip code, and a lot of of other useful info. THANKS! Resist!
Here is my list to call and share with others as well as
A great link...RESIST! Peace.
Call all of them. All the numbers start with (202)224-****
Corker (TN) 3344
McCain (AZ) 2235
Flake (AZ) 4535
Collins ( ME)2523
Heller (NV)6244
Murkowski (AK)6665
Moran (KS)6521
Johnson(WI)5323
Young (IN)5623

Call them all. If you go to Zillow for the individual STATE you can get a local address and zip to use in case the senator's phone staffer needs validation that you are a voting constituent. It works and they NEVER check. I have done it with over 400 calls in the past year. It literally takes two minutes to Google Zillow. Your phone area code doesn't matter due to cell phones. Tell them a personal story. Also, here is a useful link to share...

It's a shame we would need to do that, but the Rs use every illegal trick in the book. A bit of zip code magic is the least we can do to counter.

Hikes are more popular than this cut. Amazing.

Also, it shows the extent to which the constant Republican tax cut mantra has brainwashed everyone, including me.

Don't let them get away with that tax cut bullshit framing. The poor and middle class are losing important deductions so it will be a tax hike for many people.

Facts, public opinion, AMA opinion, or God's opinion are irrelevant. They are passing this MF ASAP.
The reluctance from the few Repubs who sometimes think is not there. Flake may be the only no, if anyone.

If a Repub objects to something, they just throw in garbage to get that vote. This is the kitchen sink and anything else anyone wants. No matter if it doesn't
Add up, they will just take it out of the poor, middle class, students and other vulnerable people later. They even have a "trigger." What a Repub word choice.

What may be the most consequential legislation in 50 years is being Railroaded through like weak spaghetti.

There is not time to stop it. They could finalize it by tomorrow.

One more HUGE step toward the destruction of the USA.

Dope Trump doesn't even realize that the Repubs will have less use for him once this is done, and there is more talk of the 25th A.

Repeat:

The ONLY way to make them care is to VOTE THEM OUT.

There MUST be consequences for doing this horrible, indeed even sinful thing. They have to lose their jobs. Unfortunately this will help them in their short-term re-election campaigns. Those donors will cough up an awful lot of money for campaign propaganda.

Which means NO ONE - repeat - NO ONE has permission to stay home on Election Day. NO ONE has ANY further permission to whine that "meh, both parties the same. They're all the same." NONE!!!

Russia, Russia, Russia.

Not that it's not super important, but this Flynn news has seemingly cut deeply into the efforts to oppose the tax scam. Before the Trump BS ACA repeal bill was killed, twitter especially, and DU to a certain extent, were all about action to defeat. Now, nothing but Flynn.

But since our economy is less robust today then when W gave away our tax dollars to the uber rich, we will probably see the results in less then 4 years.

Here's hoping you have your money in a safe place.
