Remember when Maine Sen. Susan Collins was pretending like she really didn't want to pass a massive tax bill to reward Republicans big corporate donors? When she was extracting promises from Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, promises that everyone knew he could not keep? But he made them, all right. And then promptly broke them.

The link there is to the Houses short-term funding bill that Congress is going to passor try to passbefore the final vote on the tax bill. Remember when we said that McConnell couldnt make promises for the House? Yeah, that. You already know whats not in it: everything that Collins said McConnell promised was going to happen in exchange for her vote.
Collins isnt stupid, she knew there was no value in any of what McConnell was promising, and probably also knows that even were the fixes to the Affordable Care Act that are in Alexander-Murray and reinsurance passed, they wouldnt counteract the dire impact that repealing the individual mandate is going to have on the law.
No, shes not stupid, but she hopes the American people are. She hopes that were dumb enough to believe that she was dumb enough to be snookered by McConnell. Were not.
THE FIGHT IS NOT OVER! Republicans must still pass a final version of the tax scam bill through both the House and the Senate. We can still stop this. Call your members AGAIN TODAY at (202) 224-3121.

(13,871 posts)Everything I read that she said about her deal with the party leadership indicated that her vote was dependent on that.
And ive read some (unverified) speculation that McCain might vote No again because of the Obamacare sabotage.
That would give you 3 Nos if Corker held and the bill would die.
I like this story....

(10,500 posts)It is possible that the Bill is defeated after it comes back from conference committee.
Also, it might be hard for the House to pass the Senate bill, word for word, given the mistakes the Senate GOP made in drafting the legislation, especially as it pertains to the Alternative Minimum Tax.

(13,871 posts)Theyll get it through the committee but it might be in a form that one of the bodies wont support. There are still some hardcore deficit hawks in the House who might defect if it gets even more expensive.
Ill keep this in my thoughts and prayers.

(10,237 posts)Sadly, her 2014 opponent, Shenna Bellows, is a personal friend of mine and my current state senator. I frequently ask people how Collins was so much better exactly HOW?

(35,348 posts)vote for the Obama Stimulus plan, she says it raised the debt. He ask her how she could vote for the GOP tax scam
when it increases the debt by $1 trillion. She tied herself in knots trying say the economic growth will cancel that out.
All we have heard from Republicons since Reagan is blaming Democrats for the debt now they don't matter.

(12,816 posts)How do Republican politicians even pretend to believe this? There is no track record of it working anywhere but in their fantasies.
And Republican voters: same critique. The theory of "the rich will create jobs if we just pay them enough!!!11!!" is the stuff of bullshit legend.

(10,237 posts)I can attest that the "gloriously moderate" Susan Collins, while casting some good votes, essentially has a spine of oatmeal.
She is also now serving her 4th of the 2 terms she pledged to serve when she was first elected.
PEACE!

(24,229 posts)There will be no conference for changes.
The Senate GOP can't do it again from a political point of view.
They gonna let us rain a storm of calls on them again and maybe win this time?
No.
