General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI had a probably inappropriate discussion with a medical technician today.
He started it -- I didn't. Though I didn't hold back once I realized where he stood.
He can't stand Trump either. He has an Arabic name and speaks with an accent, but I didn't ask him where he was from.
He, like I, has trouble understanding why anyone voted for DT. He mentioned having Iranian friends who voted for him because they thought they might have to pay less in taxes.
His response: yes, but there also might be fewer Iranians!

(57,102 posts)aren't isolated and that the majority in this country is not happy about Trump, and that minorities need not be afraid of all of the rest of us.

(60,015 posts)I told her "life is just getting insane out there"
She said to me "I don't know your politics, but we have a madman as president"
We then had a lovely chat comparing our outrage!

We're the majority, even if it doesn't always feel like it.

(5,042 posts)Had an sadly unfortunate discussion with a co-worker who I thought was mostly apolitical. Revealed himself to be an Obama hater who has no problem with Trump.
I called him a piece of shit after telling him to stop talking to me and he wouldn't.

(60,015 posts)do a RI drive - probably through Wickford (which we love) - off to the Cape for a few days.
Can't wait to get back, though Feb is not the best time weather-wise....

(21,639 posts)Most Iranian-Americans were staunchly for Bush in 2000 - but began turning against him in 2004, and were decidedly against the GOP by 2008.
A number of Iranian-born acquaintances told me that most of them had or knew of someone who had been harassed by any number of Bush-era agencies. I'd hate to think they've forgotten all that (to say nothing of Bush's economic collapse, which hit So Cal very hard).

(46,166 posts)But it came out during a short conversation that touched on health care and her concerns as a young mom. She started welling up with tears that we were allies. I decided to comfort her by telling her that I had faith in our institutions. That good & talented people are at work to reverse the direction of the country. And that each of us could do things, be they ever so small, to help.
She's been so worried about her children's future. Being a very positive person I knew she'd do better with a small amount of direction and optimism from an old lady like me. I've seen a lot. A presidential assassination, losing acquaintances in wars that made no sense, national financial disasters and lots of personal family losses.
Certainly, she wasn't supposed to talk about politics at her place of business. But it happens and there are small things we can say that can keep the conversation short, on track and safe for the professional we're seeing in the course of their workday. I think you did fine.

And as a very white person, I want every person of color to know that I'm with THEM.

It's a small thing, but it gives one some heart, and (here it comes) hope.

(8,052 posts)I took a quick glance at my phone. dt's face was on my screen in reference to a story about one of his ridiculous tweets. I looked at the cashier and said something like I'd give ANYTHING if I could have his picture/image blocked from my newsfeed! She completely agreed with me and we proceeded to have a conversation but it was mainly me talking and her agreeing. I'm in TX on business for a friend and not in my "breath of fresh air" home of California so I probably shouldn't have let it out but I couldn't help myself. Fortunately, the cashier was on our team...

(108,980 posts)Since I live in an area with 84% Hillary voters, it's not surprising I run into unhappy people.
It's good to hear that you do, too.

(68,586 posts)quarter just to pass it on...it is Christmas...she said yeah, that is 'nice'... too bad Trump isn't nice. Now she looked like the stereotype of a Trump voter. But she has either changed her mind or was never taken in by him...So we had a nice conversation about how much we hate Trump and the tax bill...and Republicans in general. She was pretty loud and when Trump was first elected people used to glare at you if they heard you disparage him, but not now...and some nodded and added their own comments...quite interesting. And I live in Ohio. Trump is not that popular here anymore...my neighbor has turned against him...said he can only plead temporary insanity for voting for him in the first place...that he is a big fat liar and a traitor.

(2,679 posts)She had me on the leg press that squashes you like a rollie-pollie. I was ranting but mostly raving how Flynn had flipped. This was last monday days before the actual flip. And I was pissed about rethugs loving rapists and pedophiles. Anyway, my trainer keeps putting more weights on the damn machine. I am like "Hey why you doing that? It's because I am a democrat ain't it?" After she regains her composer from LOL, she says "No! I am a democrat! I'm doing it because you are on a roll. We should talk politics more during your workouts, I can get you to have more weights and more reps when you rant."
You would be surprised how many people loathe orange man and are not afraid to say so when they can. My trainer is not the only one. My vet, pretty much every cashier I talk with, ah hell any time I am stuck waiting in line I start up a chat about evil orange turd. And I don't care if offends anyone. Had a church lady tell me we should pray for trump. I replied, "I do pray for the orange blob a zillion times a day. I pray dies or goes to jail.' The church lady and all the others were shocked. I didn't care, and I went on to tell them why. Days later, some of the peeps in that group, told me they agreed with me, and it made them feel not alone. I said "well we out number the crazy and we should not be afraid to call their BS."
