House Republicans Propose To Repeal $7.500 EV Tax Credit. (Motor Trend)

.

Here is some bad news for automakers investing heavily in electric vehicles for the future: This week, House Republicans proposed repealing the $7,500 federal EV tax credit, a move that could hinder already low sales of electric vehicles.

Automakers are preparing more electric vehicles to get ahead of the competition, and EV sales mandates in some states only add to the pressure. Federal tax credits, as well as state incentives, have helped counteract high sticker prices typically seen with electric vehicles. Not to mention these vehicles can’t travel as far on a charge as gasoline-powered cars can on a single fillup.

Gloria Bergquist, spokeswoman for the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers that represents 12 major automakers, said the situation puts the industry “in the middle between contradictory government policies.”

“There is no question that the elimination of the federal electric vehicle tax credit will impact the choices of prospective buyers and make the electric vehicle mandate in 10 states — about a third of the market — even more difficult to meet,” said Bergquist, according to a report from Automotive News. However, supporters of the repeal argue EV buyers can do without incentives since they tend to be wealthier than average consumers.

but when I struggle to find 2-3K to buy a serviceable 10-15 year old car I kinda resent some well-heeled bastard collecting 7.5K from the government to buy a Tesla sports car.

.

It covers the first 200,000 velicles made by a manufacturer.

Years back, only the "wealthy" could afford solar panels, like my school teacher uncle living hand to mouth.

He believed in it so much that he went into hock to buy them, and with the 75% rebates was still in for tens of thousands. Now, thirty some years later, solar panels are getting cheaper, that it is now below the costs of heating oil and coming close to Natural Gas. In ten more years, it will be the cheapest solution to heat and cool your house, close to geothermal systems, which are expensive to initially install, but the in-ground plumbing can last 40-50 years.

He sells his gas car, increasing the supply of used cars, lowering the price of used cars

He stops buying gas, lowering the cost of gas you buy

He reduces pollution so fewer people go to the hospital with breathing problems, lowering health care costs and health insurance premiums which you pay. And you may be the person kept out of the emergency room. Since govt pays more than half of health costs reduced health costs lower your taxes or protects govt benefits you get.

His purchase employs auto workers whose income permits them to buy goods and services from you.

His switch away from gas helps climate, reducing floods and fires, which might harm you.

We pay him $7500 because we get more than $7500 in benefits in return. He wins but we win too.
