(14,565 posts)Russia currently dominates the ladies figure skating rankings to such extent that women who would be megastars in any other country can't even make the Russian Olympic team. It is depth beyond compare in recent annals.
And little reason to believe doping plays any role, unlike obvious targets like the sledding sports and cross country events. I don't doubt that some of the Russian skaters might appeal successfully and be in the Games under the generic flag.
This has been a despicable scandal dating to Sochi and probably earlier but I do feel sorry for the handful of dominant Russian athletes who have been impacted and are likely clean, like the great high jumper Mariya Lasitskene and 110m hurdler Sergey Shubenkov.

(9,893 posts)I agree. It's a shame to work all your life for something and you can't go because your corrupt country cheated when you weren't even old enough to be there. I do get the ban, because this Sochi stuff was really egregious, but it still majorly hurts people. Maybe they can kick butt at Worlds.

(1,459 posts)LAUSANNE, Switzerland Russias Olympic team has been barred from the 2018 Winter Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea. The countrys government officials are forbidden to attend, its flag will not be displayed at the opening ceremony and its anthem will not sound. Any athletes from Russia who receive special dispensation to compete will do so as individuals wearing a neutral uniform, and the official record books will forever show that Russia won zero medals.
That was the punishment issued Tuesday to the proud sports juggernaut that has long used the Olympics as a show of global force but was exposed for systematic doping in previously unfathomable ways. The International Olympic Committee, after completing its own prolonged investigations that reiterated what had been known for more than a year, handed Russia penalties for doping so severe they were without precedent in Olympics history.
The ruling cemented that the nation was guilty of executing an extensive state-backed doping program. The scheme was rivaled perhaps only by the notorious program conducted by East Germany throughout the 1960s, 70s and 80s.
Now the sports world will wait to see how Russia responds. Some Russian officials have threatened to boycott if the I.O.C. delivered such a severe punishment.

(3,789 posts)Due to the US ramping up war with NK. Lindsay Graham said yesterday it was time for US military and their families to evacuate SK.

(10,272 posts)1. What the hell are the Russians gonna boycott if they're already banned?
2. If the military evacuates SK, what the fuck are we supposed to fight a damn war with?
These 2 questions are only related by the idiocy of the Brains that forced them to be asked.
Like Minds, and all that.

(22,133 posts)politics involved w/ the Olympics, and state-sponsored cheating. The Olympics are supposed to be where everyone sets aside their political differences and engage in healthy competition, w/ no cheating.
I applaud this action on the part of the IOC, to ban such state-sponsored activities. This supports those persons who truly work hard to participate in the Olympics.

(470 posts)Notwithstanding my abhorrence for the way the IOC comport themselves, I do say that they actually did show some backbone in this instance.

(1,202 posts)they said this would be a major embarrassment for Russia if they were excluded form the Winter Olympics...Russia, after all experiences Winter at least 6 months of the year.
I'm OK with the whole world realizing that Russians cheat....and cannot be trusted to change their ways in the future, even when caught in the outright lies.

(14,565 posts)Tainted samples through holes in the wall, and I'm sure it was far beyond that.
Obscene for anyone to believe that Putin would cheat in a comparatively insignificant matter like the Olympic Games yet keep his hands off an American election. I mentioned that in my dentist's office the other day. The girl who works in the office and (based on prior visits) is obviously anti-Trump broke out into laughter, while the other woman who supports Trump had a horrified look on her face.
