Its so grim lately, and I understand the need to not ignore any of the horrors were going through. But only acknowledging the horrors robs us of the fuel we need to fight them, the reasons for fighting them, the things that let us know we are beautiful and fragile and worthwhile.
In some ways this is an experiment. Ill leave the OP up until the first negative comment, even if its a but... All positive responses to others good news welcome.
Ill start. Through the unselfish, painful act of a good woman my kids have adopted a gorgeous baby boy. He is our joy. And today we have rare winter sun in Seattle. And the holiday lights are so lovely. And the birds at my feeder have become so familiar theyre neighbors. And we have enough, and a little to spare.
And I appreciate DU.
Yall?

http://www.refinery29.com/2017/12/183958/meryl-streep-priest-exorcism-steven-spielberg
It might come as a surprise, but the only time Spielberg and Streep worked together prior to The Post was almost two decades ago. Streep had provided voice work for Spielberg's 2000 film A.I. Artificial Intelligence, which only required a day to complete. Apparently, a lot happened in one day, though Streep ended up referring Spielberg a priest who could exorcise his home.
"Most of the time we talked about how his property was haunted and did I know anybody who did exorcisms?" Streep told THR of her experience with Spielberg on A.I. Artificial Intelligence. "And of course, I did. I got him a priest."

We are hoping to get protest laws changed in the city. We have a meeting with city council tonight. It looks like they will reduce or waive draconian fees. (Yay!!!)
We also have a climate plan for our city that is being implemented.

here is some serious good news. my sister is running for county board in a once solidly red county that is now purple. in 2004 when a certain skinny guy w a funny name wanted to be my senator, there was almost no dem party in the county. but a few hundred came out of the woodwork to here him speak at a last minute rally. it was a moment i will never forget.
now that county, where dems didnt even used to bother to run, has a slate of candidates for every single seat in the county.
hillary took the county by 7%.

(36,865 posts)It was a little overcast and dreary, fairly warm for this time of year (45 F) and very, very windy. It felt so elemental, the forces of Mother Nature swirling around me. Leaves skittered to and fro like little mice as the Canadian geese welcomed the new day with a graceful fly-by and a resounding, collective "honk". The remnants of the supermoon seemed to follow me at every turn. Hokey, I know, but I appreciate the rare moments that feel so magical. Especially now.
Happy Birthday!

(60,015 posts)We've been each other's best friends since the day we were married - it all started when we met at a party on April 7, 1979 - one neither of us wanted to go to...she was breaking up with someone, I was recently dumped. She was the first person I saw when I arrived and I knew my goal was to get to meet her. Which I did (in line for beer). The rest is very pleasant history.
Thanks for putting a bright shining light of an OP on DU!

For the first time in about 2 decades, we'll be spending Christmas away from home. Our younger daughter has moved in with her boyfriend, who has some kind of villa (no idea--never saw it) out in the hills outside Frankfurt. She says there is room for his 3 boys, him and her, my wife and me, my wife's mom, and my other daughter who is flying in for a couple of days from the USA. If THAT isn't going to be crowded, then he must own a renovated castle or something.

My 3rd team still has a chance too if I win the next game and some others stumble...

Also just got the grocery list for on the way home from work tonight. Taco burgers! (one of my faves lol).

(12,132 posts)all my starters and high draft picks got injured or suspended so whatever I can scrape off the waiver wire will have to do. I think i got the very last slot in both leagues I made the playoffs. (My money league initial draft score-card had me winning the whole year without a loss - but injuries killed that the first week lol).
The key to good taco burgers is the bread. You can prepare the meat however you like, we just brown hamburger and throw in an Old El Paso taco seasoning packet. Lettuce, cheese, sour cream and whatever other toppings you want with a side of refried benas.
But the bread has to be Martin's Potato Bread sandwich rolls. Sooooooo soft and delicious. Sometimes I wonder if I just eat the burgers as an excuse to eat the bread. Martin's is also the only hot dog buns I'll use.
Orrr if you can get to Kansas there's a small chain called Taco-Tico and they make them the best. They used to have 2 locations here in Orlando but the rise of Taco Hell drove them out. Their taco burgers were our inspiration as we missed them so.

(41,986 posts)Easiest winter meal ever. Brown ground turkey (or beef but turkey is good and less greasy). Add 3 cans assorted beans in whatever combo you like, kidney, chili or garbanzo, one can corn w/o sugar (use all liquids), one can Rotel tomatoes, one pkg dry taco seasoning and one pkg dry ranch dressing. You can add onions and green peppers but I usually dont. Serve with corn chips, shredded cheese, sour cream. Its simple and delicious.

(11,330 posts)Solar and wind are now the cheapest form of electricity, and much cheaper than coal. Coal, which looked like it would be the future of China and India, is on the way out. The Chinese have canceled 200 coal plants, some of which were already partially built. In the US, existing coal plants have been closing around the country. A little recognized fact is that carbon emissions peaked in the US and Europe ten years ago and are already declining. China expects to peak in the next decade, and India likely will in the 2030s. Combined they hold almost 3 billion people, and if they peak, it likely means the world will have peaked. Some thought we may have already peaked, as carbon emissions were flat in 2015 and 2016 at about 9.5 gigatons of carbon. However, it looks like there was in fact some increase in 2017, but the multi-year trend is clearly decelerating sharply.

(47,953 posts)A janitor for a bank in Howard County, Texas, was surprised with a puppy on his birthday after his coworkers learned that his dog had died.
Floyd Green has been a custodial worker for the bank for over three decades. His Yorkie had recently died of old age, so the staff decided to pitch in and get him a new Yorkshire terrier puppy.
The video was uploaded by an employee who wrote the following about Mr Green:
"Our prosperity crew found out that his Yorkie died of old age, so our staff decided to all pitch in and get him a new one for his birthday. He is a sweet man and is the reason we look forward to Tuesdays and Fridays (the days he works with us)."

My good news is that today will be the very last time my man will have to take his one thousand dollar pill. Nothin' better than that, we won't know for sure if treatment did any good for a while, so I'm just really pleased that we've reached this day. Goal.
Oh, and I'm loving this sunshine, too! Our birdies aren't too happy with the cold (it finally reached 40 degrees about half an hour ago), tho I do think they're digging the end of the rains... I was able to get some much-needed outside work finished today, without coming back inside soaking wet.
Hope your day is just as good. Congratulations on your new little addition to the family!

(24,736 posts)instead of listening to current events news, I listened to Diane Rehm's new podcast, "On My Mind." In addition to a fascinating (to me) conversation with Michael Mosley, MD, author of "Clever Guts," about gut health (seriously - it's a thing! and an important one!), even more delightfully, Diane also interviewed Isabelle Allende who has just come out with a new book, "In the Midst of Winter." It includes themes of late-life love, and I learned that Diane Rehm just remarried at age 81!, after being widowed a couple years ago! Ms. Allende has also found love (again) at age 75!
I re-committed to trying to avoid "current events news," and instead keep up with the good side of humanity - science, art, literature.

(108,980 posts)who turned up at our door one day, brought here by one of our kids when she got locked out by a drunken mother.
It was 1 am and I'd never met her before. She ended up staying. She hadn't been able to graduate from high school, but she found a program at the local community college that would let her earn her GED and her AA at the same time. After that, she applied to UW. She got a waiver from FAFSA (federal financial aid) forms due to her abusive family situation, and worked at a part-time job and lived with us, so she graduated debt-free in June.
Now she's working in a job she loves. Woo-hoo!
Happy birthday to you, nolabear! Have fun with your wonderful grandson!
