Trump lawyer disputes report, says bank didnt get a subpoena
Bloombergs Steven Arons reports on the Deutsche Bank records subpoena.
Special prosecutor Robert Mueller zeroed in on President Donald Trumps business dealings with Deutsche Bank AG as his investigation into alleged Russian meddling in U.S. elections widens.
Mueller issued a subpoena to Germanys largest lender several weeks ago, forcing the bank to submit documents on its relationship with Trump and his family, according to a person briefed on the matter, who asked not to be identified because the action has not been announced.
President Donald Trumps personal lawyer John Dowd disputed that account, saying he had been told by Deutsche Bank that no such subpoena had been issued.
We have confirmed that the news reports that the Special Counsel had subpoenaed financial records relating to the president are false. No subpoena has been issued or received. We have confirmed this with the bank and other sources, Dowd wrote in an email.
When approached about the Dowd comment, the person familiar with the matter reiterated that the bank had received a subpoena. Handelsblatt reported the subpoena earlier Tuesday.
A spokesman for Muellers office didnt immediately respond to a request for comment................................................

(5,313 posts)...if Deutsche Bank wants to do business in the United States, they have to play by the rules, including responding to subpoenas issued in investigations of the bank and/or its clients.

(4,787 posts)under which countries agree in theory to, among other things, establish internal laws that require their financial institutions to provide assistance to the other signatories in their criminal investigations. There are UN conventions that provide for this, as well as others established through multinational groups such as the G7. The UN's efforts in this area date back to the 1980's, focusing then on the ill gotten proceeds of narco-trafficking.
The Manafort case is based in part on information that Mueller obtained from banks in Cyprus.
