Atlanta Mayor: Bottoms claims victory; Norwood seeks recount

In an incredibly tight finish in the race to become Atlanta's 60th mayor in history, Keisha Lance Bottoms finished ahead of Mary Norwood by 759 votes in Tuesday's runoff.

While Bottoms and her supporters claimed victory, Norwood told her supporters she is asking for a recount.

With 100 percent of precincts reporting, Bottoms received 46,464 votes to Norwood's 45,705 votes.

According to the Georgia secretary of state, a losing candidate can request a recount if the difference in votes between the winner and loser is not more than one percent of the total votes cast in the race.

In terms of overall percentage, Bottoms and Norwood each received 50% of the vote.

Hmm, just looked it up, pop of Atlanta is only 472,000. Fooled me. Been there a few times and I always thought it was a much bigger city.

Bottoms, a Democrat, squared off against Norwood, an independent, in the nonpartisan runoff to succeed Reed, who is term limited from seeking re-election.

Bottoms, meanwhile, sought to cast Norwood as a Republican hiding behind the guise of her independent status. The city of Atlanta is a Democratic stronghold in a state that is otherwise largely Republican, and the city's government remains the only major Democratic power center in the state's political system, which is dominated by Republican officeholders.

Norwood also got endorsements from several of her former competitors, and state senator Vincent Fort -- the unsuccessful candidate backed by independent Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont -- had kind words to say about her after the general election.

And Bottoms got herself a last-minute boost as well. Democratic US Sens. Kamala Harris of California and Cory Booker of New Jersey appeared in Atlanta the weekend before the runoff election to promote her candidacy.
Bottoms likewise has the backing of major Atlanta hip-hop figures, like Killer Mike and T.I., who compared Norwood to President Donald Trump.

She was recorded in a meeting with Atlanta Republicans calling black voters "felons, thugs and paid voters".

9. No, but white "progressives" in Atlanta largely lined up with Norwood, by the sound of it.
