But, the Democrats won the moral high ground. Congrats. I hope that there's some sort of trophy that comes with that. So that when SS and Medicare are being destroyed with budget cuts and Moore is writing legislation to strip citizenship rights from the LGBTQ community, we can all look fondly at the Moral High Ground trophy.

OH and a right wing sweep of 2018 elections as they find anonymous "accusers" for every Dem running.

(14,732 posts)I hope we can bask in the self-satisfied glow of knowing we lost one of (if not THE) best Senators we have because of our own foolishness in biting on Swift-Boat accusations while letting a law-breaking pedophile waltz into the Senate to add another crazy to the list of Republican whackos already there. Let's be sure not to hurt ourselves patting ourselves on the back too hard!

(58,785 posts)Personally, if I could trade 10% of our left-wing whiners for 10% of the right-wingers whose only remaining principle is being passionately against the other party, I'd do it in a heartbeat.
How to get rid of them after we swept the nation in 2018 would be a problem for then. But I'm inclined to guess we'd want to leave the whiny defeatists we'd traded off to continue their work for the Republicans.
Just imagine, "We've going to lose in 2018 because our leaders can't do anything right" chorusing out in a million Republican voices all over social media every day or so. If only.

Whatever happened to the plan to rebuild the infrastructure? I didn't think welfare was even mentioned during the campaign.

Yep. The forces of evil and insanity are winning big time and with the countries legal machinery taken over by the extreme right theres virtually no way to change direction no matter what popular sentiment is.
I won't be too surprised when legal racial discrimination is reinstated and people start dying from bad food products with no legal recourse available to them.

(6,262 posts)Unless and until I learn that Franken molested a 14 year old or used his position of power to sexually harass and derail a woman's career, I will accept a contrite statement about behaving like a pig in the past and then going thru the ethics committee and then letting the Minn voters decide at the next election.
Same for a Repug. This old lady can and does see degrees of behavior even on the other side of the aisle. Franken does not meet the threshold IMO.
If he resigns, there will be happy dances in Sessions' office and the Oval Office.

(2,785 posts)they are going to gain by this? The support of republican women that voted for Trump? Newsflash they voted for Trump despite the allegations of his sexual misconduct. If Trump isn't impeached and runs for re-election in 2020 he will then turnaround and talk like he was Franken's best friend on the campaign trail.

(31,261 posts)But if Moore is elected and not kicked out of the Senate, that does them in with lots of suburban republican women, I know some of that type, they don't run to Democrats because they come from longtime republican families, the ones that I know are upset with Trump being elected and likely abandon the party for good, a few already have.

(31,261 posts)Others held their nose and voted for Trump. Most regret that vote now. If Moore wins in Alabama and is seated, the ones that held their nose are saying there is nothing left for them in the repug party. They become leaners that we can talk to as long as we don't abandon our principles to get their votes.

(35,077 posts)Doing the right thing is not wagging your finger at someone who says their life matters or calling them a terrorist.
Doing the right thing is a government that doesn't have people dehumanize or demonize you for being different on speed dial.
Patting ourselves on the back and getting some imaginary trophy for our conduct isn't necessarily the right thing.

(1,399 posts)That didn't give it's progenitor a popular majority in 1992 or 1996, that cost us both houses of Congress, that cost us the presidency in 2000, 2004, and 2016, and, oh yeah, put tens of thousands of "scary" black men in federal prison.
And it's STILL the national party strategy.
