(10,024 posts)I too am a woman, but I do not think allowing anonymous accusers to cause a respected senator to resign is right. How do you know that someone like Roger Stone did not hire these people to make accusations? Are they credible? No one should be forced to resign without knowing who his accusers are and whether their claims are credible. So far, there are no details unlike in Roy Moores case where there is a wealth of corroborating evidence. Put yourself in Frankens place. If someone accused you of a wrong thatwas costing you your job, would you not want to know who was making the accusation? Wouldnt you have the right to refute it if it was not true?

(3,435 posts)..needs to get ahead of it by using due process, lawyer up, comments only made by his lawyer; any accuser coming forward should file an assault complaint if warranted. Until then, his only statement should be: I'm not vacating my job! FULL STOP! Just a simple statement by his lawyer ..no apologies! He has sincerly apologized on numerous occassions. Enough! Basta!
Consider how eltrumpf shut his accusers up "I'll sue you" and " they're all liars". All 16 or more are lying? Anyway, repubs are better at fighting back, dems want truth and facts and we care, Franken sincerely cares if we''ve offended people...that's who we are!
Yet, that doesn't mean we dont fight back... repubs have a propaganda machine of hate and lies ..we don't; always try to stand on truth, and when we by chance make a mistake, we seek ways to self correct; have a higher ethical standard..repubs dont. As well, we don't hide behind so call fake kkkhristian standards they have. Republikkklans are hypocrites and liars!

(3,435 posts)...cohesive, collective group we're to concerned about be nice, polite, professional, ethical because that's who we are. The DNC needs to hire progressive, aggressive dems that meet regularly and set taking points only they go out to represent dems... to put the lens on repubs including trumpf and every time (which is, well all the time) they spill hate and lies, spin hate propaganda, lie about their damaging, bigot ed policies . ..now, do I purport lies, hateful rhetoric, insight violence...no! Dems work on the premise of facts, truth.
There is nothing wrong wth fighting back...this when "they go low we go high " is bullshit! It sounds elitist and smug. It didn't work in 2016, won't work in 2018, 2020. Dems then go into a lengthy explanation instead of just saying "shut up you bully " When eltrumpf goes after someone say about tapping his phone...say prove it or shut the f up, of course Obama wouldn't say that, but rest assure if he had, eltrumpf would have backed off wth whimper like the coward he is...or better yet dont say a word, just sue his ass for defamation and be done with it. When Kelly stated lies, racially tinged comment about about Representative Wilson ... Wilson. And dems came out stating he needs to apologize ..still waiting--then, the Black Caucus sent letter requesting an apology ...still waiting! ...Damn it! I would have read the letter on the floor, and read transcripts of press meeting where he said hateful racially charged comments about Wilson, read transcript of actual of event in question and have of public record by reading it all on the floor of congress. Or, rather than all that...not say a word, not ask, beg for apology.. .don't give notice to anyone ..just go straight to court and sue Kelly for defamation and demand a public apology, sue for damages to be sent to a black college..... I wouldn't settle for anything less..
Either of my suggestions...calls these bullies out, gets into a formal public setting, of public record.
Sorry, for length, and if you've read to this point... thanks for allowing me to rant!
Ps. Sorry didn't edit. Do you see how we' re always apologizing, self correcting... providing a long, extensive explanation ..aye! I need to practice what I preach! (47,520 posts)Many of us were extremely upset with Democrats in congress yesterday. I like being part of a party that is polite, reasonable, and honest. I certainly don't want Democrats to behave like republicans, but I agree that they need to fight back more. The Democratic party used to be the tough party, very street smart and combative, as it represented the working class. I certainly don't want to go back to the Richard Daley type Democats, but we could toughen up and stop eating our own.
You are right about the "always apologizing" and "self correcting". If we believe in something, we should stand our ground and not let the bullies win time and time again. Republicans see our integrity as weakness, we need to make it our strength.

(21,506 posts)The complaint includes four signed affidavits from other former Conyers staff members who said this was no isolated incident. One former staffer reported witnessing a variety of inappropriate sexual advances from Conyers, directed toward herself and other female staff members. Another former staffer said, I was asked on multiple occasions to pick up women and bring them to Mr. Conyers apartments, hotel rooms, etc.
A male employee said he saw Conyers rubbing the complainants legs and other body parts in what appeared to be a sexual manner, and saw him doing the same with other women. The employee said he warned Conyers to be more careful and Conyers said he would work on his behavior. Then the employee set up a December 2011 meeting to discuss mistreatment of staff and his misuse of federal resources. The affidavit says Conyers agreed to make improvements, as long as I worked directly with him and stopped writing memos and emails about concerns.
The claims against Franken are not even in the same universe.

(7,006 posts)And You Might Have Missed The Large Rally Where Citizens in #JohnConyers District Indeed Called Loudly and Boldly For #DueProcess -- before he #Resigned.
Conyers is embroiled in controversy after multiple women alleged that the congressman -- the longest currently serving member of the US House of Representatives -- had sexually harassed them when they worked for him. The entire House Democratic leadership has called for Conyers to step down, but he has denied any wrongdoing.
The congressman was admitted to a hospital late last week for shortness of breath, dizziness and other symptoms, according to his attorney Arnold Reed. Conyers did not attend the rally this morning, which was organized by Michigan state Democratic Rep. Sherry Gay-Dagnogo.
Approximately 40 state and community leaders, including politicians and pastors, stood before an enthusiastic crowd of community members, chanting phrases like "due process" and "no justice, no peace" along with the speakers.
Many of the speakers emphasized that they did not discount the allegations the women had made against Conyers but wanted him to be treated fairly. Pastor Warren Evans told the crowd that his call for due process and a full investigation "has nothing to do with being pro-John or against women's rights."
"This is about doing what's right," he said.
The speakers pointed to what they felt is harsher treatment of Conyers than the reaction to sexual harassment allegations against Sen. Al Franken, a Minnesota Democrat, and other lawmakers.

He doesn't have a right to confront his accusers? Dear Senator Franken,
I want you to do what is right for you, your family, and the people of your state, and I hope the "right thing" is for you to announce a FULL INVESTIGATION and NOT your resignation.
Sir, if these charges are true, then you must take your lumps, but, if they are not true, then what JUSTICE is served by you leaving the situation before it can be properly vetted? If these allegations are nothing more than a vendetta against you, the Democratic party, and the people of the US, then you would do your constituents and the people of the US a great DISSERVICE by prematurely resigning. It would also be a set back to the #metoo movement if lies and false allegations become mixed in with the cries of real victims.
I wish you the best and hope you do the right thing and justice prevails.
Also, as a side note, with the "titles" selection, since it is 2017 and marriage equality is the law of the land (for now), how's about "Mr. & Mr." and "Ms. & Ms." and "Mrs. & Mrs."

Your submitted request contained a potential security risk.
Please try your submission again using natively composed plain text (not copied and pasted from another document), with few or no hyperlinks, or other syntax that may be interpreted as computer code (examples: '--', '&').

Oh well, likely to fall on deaf ears at this point.

(4,033 posts)We NEED Senators like Al Franken and I told him so. Haul him up before an Ethics hearing. Expel him if he's done something bad enough to warrant it. But - he absolutely should NOT resign!

(9,350 posts)I called his office a few minutes ago. I expressed my support for him and asked him not to resign until he is proven guilty or until he finishes his term. There might be a large amount of calls going into his office because apparently all the office lines were busy and I had to leave a message. Hopefully, he is getting a large amount of support in those calls.

He's needed where he is; to drop out now because of GOP pressure is ludicrous.

(9,865 posts)...the Senators who are asking him to quit. It's tragicaly premature.
I just called Gillibrand: 202-224-4451.
Or her NYC office: 212-688-6262
As I talked to her office aide, I got angrier and angrier. He's one our best Senators, damn it!
I stand by Al and the ethics process he's asked for.
Anonymous accusers are extremeley suspect.

(54,414 posts)Please please PLEASE do NOT resign tomorrow or even hint at it!!!
All this innuendo, and we don't even know if all these so-called accusers are even real or not! I don't care HOW many Democratic Senators are jumping on this bandwagon. Unless they know a lot of things the public doesn't, we are being taken for one enormous ride here. Go thou and do NOT do likewise, fer Pete's sake!
This is not the time to let Mitch McTurtle smile his smug smile and somehow conspire to bring back Norm Coleman from the political dead--a group that is rarely grateful, to coin a phrase.
If you are considering succumbing to the pressure tomorrow, PLEASE reconsider. If you have no plans to resign, send me some more of those folksy fundraising letters, will ya?

From what I'm hearing, rank and file DFLers are not supporting the idea he resign and very few are buying this latest accusation.

(2,221 posts)I just tried to use this email address to send my plea to Senator Franken to please stand strong with us and for us-that we had his back. Hit the submit button and was told that the website couldnt be found ( or something similar) and that was it! My email was gone. Im going to try to find another way to contact him. And after I take my little granddaughter home Im going to start contacting the shortsighted legislators that have started this crap and let them know how I feel. Dear Lord...

(2,013 posts)to resign. That must be the precedent here. FULL investigation before any HINT of a resignation. Let the chips fall where they may after that, but we're not losing this excellent Senator without at least a full inquiry.

(115,761 posts)I am so pissed off at the spineless Dems in the Senate right now! I'm a Minnesota resident and I want to elect my own damn senator, thank you very much. If the Alabama voters get to elect their guy, who is a child molester, why does our senator, allegedly guilty of something not even in the same universe, get railroaded out of his job when I, who helped elect him, don't get to weigh in on it?

(6,976 posts)I'll be going back there NOW Thanks I've sent the link to buddies too, telling them to email Sen. Franken.
I have the worst headache. I just took two Tylenol. I'm definitely changing my party affiliation to Independent in January 2018. I have no use for a party who only fights now-and-then whose also so pious that they'd hang US, their constituents, out to dry because they're SO pious
Also, Dems roll over for thuglicans when thuglicans tell them to roll over. I'm also not sending Dems another dime either.
I think he'll resign because of the stampede by fellow Dems , but I'm still sending him an email of support

(382 posts)Although the whole exercise left me in a puddle of tears.
Like many of you, I ask all those holier-than-thou Democrats in Congress: WHERE'S THE OUTRAGE over Republican racists-pedophiles Roy Moore and Donald Trump? It's so typical that they would want to crucify one of their own over a half dozen, one-off improprieties that have yet to be proven beyond a reasonable doubt.
I'm about done with the Democratic Party. Without Franken, our most fearless, adept and masterful attack dog among all the jelly fish Democrats, if he resigns, we're doomed!
I'm gonna go have myself another good cry...
