Just how dumb IS Mark Dayton?

Just heard that if the MN Senator (I'm sick of typing his name) resigns tomorrow, Dayton will appoint a caretaker (probably the Lt Governor) to the seat. The caretaker will pledge not to run in 2018 (not 2020 as I originally stated) in a special election for the remaining two years of the term.

Smart.

I mean, who needs incumbency? Democrats are an unbeatable force these days. ACROSS THE BOARD WE HOLD MAJORITIES IN CONGRESS, STATEHOUSES, LOCAL OFFICES . . . . .

. . . . . wait? What?

Really?

Hmmm.

Never mind.

Assuming this is true (it came from that nimrod Steve Kornacki), it's not a stupid move. He appoints someone who can do a decent job for the next year but doesn't want the job permanently; in the meantime they can carefully vet a candidate for 2018 and then for 2020 (making sure there are no skeletons in their closet, given the new zero-tolerance policy), organize fundraising and generally set up for a solid run. The lt. governor (the proposed appointee) is not well-known and would probably not hold up against the likely GOP candidate, Norm "The Weasel" Coleman. Other, more solid candidates will quickly emerge for 2018 - I'm speculating the AG, Lori Swanson, or Congresswoman Betty McCollum. Mark Dayton is very definitely not a stupid person; he knows his state and his party very well.

But in situations like this it seems like maybe the strategy moving forward should be “what would the dirty republicans do?”.... and then we do that. Last time I checked they’re winning a lot.

Have I lost my mind? It’s ok to tell me that if I have but it just seems like maybe a new approach might be in order.

Then the winner will have to defend the seat in 2020.
