Why? I am serious. Why? What do you believe and stand for?

It sometimes frustrates me by making too many compromises, but it's a party that has done good things in the past and can do transformative things in the future if it will trust in the people and in the power of what it stands for.

(6,855 posts)I have FDR's picture on the wall. Democrat because Democrats stand for the poor and powerless. Democrat because my grandfather was a union printer in Detroit in the 30's and had to fight for weekends, 4O hour week, insurance benefits. He grew up in abject poverty and retired with a pension. My father went to college on the GI bill.
My great-grandfather as an Irish immigrant stumped for the Democratic Party in Michigan. He was full of hatred for the British government for letting Irish people starve. The image of an uncaring government was the ultimate picture of evil in my house. 100 plus years after the famine, we still felt the effects.

(841 posts)Liberal values made this country great and I still believe in them even though I sometimes wonder why I bother since so many people don't seem to care anymore.
I basically believe in sticking up for the weak against the powerful.

I believe in equality. I believe in compassion. I believe we should be good stewards of Mother Earth. I believe in God. I also believe anyone else is free to believe or not believe as they choose so long as their belief doesn't hurt anyone else. I believe that what any two consenting adults do in their bedroom is their business. I believe in the right for a woman to choose.
I believe in the idea that mankind needs to evolve. That we need to be better tomorrow than we are today. I believe in education and healthcare and kindness. I believe in space exploration and science and imagination that ultimately becomes reality.
I am disappointed in what I've seen from some Democratic leaders today. I feel they are not fighting hard enough for me, for these ideals, and for the ideals that SHOULD make up the Democratic platform.

Until today.
Now I'm disgusted with the party.
Democrats will still get my vote when they run as an opponent to Republicans...
But the DNC and their offspring at the State level will get as much support from me as they provided Senator Franken.

(22,357 posts)There's a lot I wish the party did differently. But at this point I'm not ready to pick up my rifle and bring the revolution, so I work within the system I have with the tool that is closest to what I believe, and at this point it's the Democratic Party.
