If we support Franken, it should be because we don't believe the allegations, not because the Republicans get away with it.

(68,586 posts)over this. Franken deserved an investigation period-it is a witch hunt. And just wait until the GOP uses this to pass the revised tax bill..we may not have a senator until 20...I am sure the high ground will be so helpful as they gut all social programs. And the next time they come after a sitting Senator or Representative, we just toss them out too...no need for proof...just an accusation...and it is fine if it is anonymous.

(68,586 posts)differently...the others are all bullshit...now when the GOP passes the revised tax plan and guts social security because they leave Franken's seat vacant( which they can under the law) by one vote, maybe then you will understand the purpose of the GOP attack on Franken.

(68,586 posts)this topic. Sen. Al Franken said Thursday that he has a different memory of a rehearsal with former Playboy Playmate Leeann Tweeden, who accused the former Saturday Night Live comedian of kissing and later groping her during a USO tour in 2006.
I certainly dont remember the rehearsal for the skit in the same way, but I send my sincerest apologies to Leeann, said Franken, a Democrat from Minnesota. As to the photo, it was clearly intended to be funny but wasnt. I shouldnt have done it.

(58,724 posts)By the way, the NY Post is a right-wing tabloid.
Here's his second, more detailed statement (via CNN):
The first thing I want to do is apologize: to Leeann, to everyone else who was part of that tour, to everyone who has worked for me, to everyone I represent, and to everyone who counts on me to be an ally and supporter and champion of women. There's more I want to say, but the first and most important thingand if it's the only thing you care to hear, that's fineis: I'm sorry.
"I respect women. I don't respect men who don't. And the fact that my own actions have given people a good reason to doubt that makes me feel ashamed.
"But I want to say something else, too. Over the last few months, all of usincluding and especially men who respect womenhave been forced to take a good, hard look at our own actions and think (perhaps, shamefully, for the first time) about how those actions have affected women.
"For instance, that picture. I don't know what was in my head when I took that picture, and it doesn't matter. There's no excuse. I look at it now and I feel disgusted with myself. It isn't funny. It's completely inappropriate. It's obvious how Leeann would feel violated by that picture. And, what's more, I can see how millions of other women would feel violated by itwomen who have had similar experiences in their own lives, women who fear having those experiences, women who look up to me, women who have counted on me.
"Coming from the world of comedy, I've told and written a lot of jokes that I once thought were funny but later came to realize were just plain offensive. But the intentions behind my actions aren't the point at all. It's the impact these jokes had on others that matters. And I'm sorry it's taken me so long to come to terms with that.
"While I don't remember the rehearsal for the skit as Leeann does, I understand why we need to listen to and believe women's experiences.
"I am asking that an ethics investigation be undertaken, and I will gladly cooperate.
"And the truth is, what people think of me in light of this is far less important than what people think of women who continue to come forward to tell their stories. They deserve to be heard, and believed. And they deserve to know that I am their ally and supporter. I have let them down and am committed to making it up to them."

(68,586 posts)I believe Franken was railroaded by the namby pamby Dems in our party who caved to the right wing smear machine...so you will never convince me these women are not righty liars...Tweeden is already outed as such and the second one was never credible...as for the anonymous women...they are meaningless as we don't know who they are. This means open season on our elected and those who lean in a Democratic direction in the media...you already see it happening...oh did you happen to see the Tweeden/Trump Jr. tweets? You should read them.

(7,418 posts)The actual quote is
WD: Just don't lose sight of whose rights you're violating.
GH: Don't put me on your perch, Mr. Ward.
WD: Don't drag me into your gutter, Mr. Anderson!
GH: These people crawled out of a sewer, Mr. Ward! Now maybe the gutter's where we should be!
And he was right. In certain context, the high road leads you to be an easy target on a ridge line.
It's an apropos quote. Specifically because today's GOP are the philosophical descendants of those unreconstructed Confederates in "Mississippi Burning."

(2,194 posts)Still resonates well given the current (on-going?) situation though.

(2,194 posts)Dems wouldn't want to look like hypocrites if that happens.
Anything less than for a reason like that is just self inflicted damage.
