President Trump did not completely grasp the ramifications of recognizing Jerusalem as Israel's capital, several advisers told The Washington Post.
Trump wanted to seem "pro-Israel" and focused on "making a deal," two advisers told the Post.
According to the newspaper, some administration officials voicing their support for the decision included Vice President Mike Pence and adviser Jared Kushner, who is also Trump's son-in-law.
Others, though, advocated against the move, including Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and Defense Secretary Jim Mattis.

He understands politically how to motivate his base, but not much else.
I think Putin is behind recognizing Jerusalem. It diminishes the US as a world leader.

(14,492 posts)He see this as a Trump "win" for benefit of the base, consequences be damned and I suspect his so-called spiritual advisers were calling for this.
Let's also remember that his advisers are afraid to cross him on anything he takes a notion to do.
