for House seats and whatever Senate seats are up in 2018. They'll be less likely to be accused of sexual misbehavior, so maybe we can get on with the job of regaining control of Congress and our state legislatures.
If Al Franken resigns, which I suspect he will do, Minnesota Governor Dayton will almost certainly appoint a woman to replace him until the 2018 election. He'd be a fool not to. And that's good, because Republicans are going to search for women who are willing to accuse almost every Democrat in office of some sort of sexual harassment or assault. Why, even a warm handshake could be interpreted that way.
"I shook his hand, and he held onto my hand too long, making it a sexual thing."
Am I being facetious? Nope. One of the accusers of Franken is accusing him of "touching" her waist, and even that is being taken seriously. I guarantee that other Democrats in the House and Senate will face such accusations after Franken's resignation. Republicans have nothing whatever to lose by encouraging women to report the slightest contact. No proof will be required, either. The mere accusation will be enough to force office-holders to follow Franken's example and resign.
So, I propose that women run for all seats in the House, Senate and state legislatures. We should elect them, if only to protect our Democratic office-holders from such accusations. And, if you think I'm posting this as a satirical essay, you're wrong. I'm dead serious about this. Just watch and see who the next Democrats to be accused will be.

(4,426 posts)This episode is going to have repercussions far beyond Minnesotas senate seat. The Democratic Party piling on Franken is going to backfire big time. I fear we have just written off the 2018 elections.
And I dont particularly care at this point.
