Sexual Politics? Consider Streaming David Mamet's Movie, "Oleanna"

It's very apropos for the current situation in politics today. You probably haven't seen it. It wasn't much of a successful film. It's also a very strange film. After watching it, you soon come to realize that whatever your opinion is of the dilemma and events faced by the two characters in the film is wrong. If you don't feel that way, you probably weren't paying attention.

It's a movie that is really a long dialog between a college professor and a young woman who is a student. It reflects many of the situations we're facing right now that occur between men and women. At the end of the movie, there is no resolution. You will feel one way or another about it, but both conclusions will be wrong. That's sort of the situation we're in right now, politically.

You probably haven't seen the film. You can. It's available to stream on Netflix. It's just 87 minutes long. It's pertinent to today's news.

But, remember, whatever your reaction is to the movie is wrong. If you change your mind about how you feel, you're still wrong. It's was a brilliant play, and a brilliant movie. One of the few I've ever seen that guarantees that you'll be wrong, however you feel about the story.

We're seeing a similar situation playing out in DC and across the country right now. We're all wrong about it, regardless of how we feel about it. That's what I think.

I'm probably wasting my time with this post, because nobody saw the movie. I think it's worth watching, if you didn't.

You’re the second person I know to mention it. I like Mamet. And I like hard problems. Thank you.

It grossed only $124,000 in its original release. My wife and I saw it in an art house that year. We talked about it for hours. We finally figured out that we were both wrong. It was very interesting.

And by some standards even the definition of “progress” is impossible.

Ever see Sunset Limited? Also well worth watching.

Nor did I cheer the young woman student. I ended up cheering nobody. There was no resolution in that story. Nobody won. Both people lost. If you were on either side, you were wrong. There was no correct view to take.

Sort of like life, really, isn't it?

Did you cheer either side? If so, you got it wrong.
