I had CNN on in the background all last evening. I said a week or so ago that the usual Republican spokes-whores were down to phoning it in when it comes to defending Trump.
Well, its far worse now. I didnt see a single GOPer who didnt immediately try to change the subject when asked about the current news re Don Jrs testimony, the newly-released emails between Lil Don and the Russians, Trumps newest drop in the polls, etc.
Even the most ardent Trump ass-kissers, Jack Kingston and Jason Miller, couldnt conjure up a response to the news without immediately launching into whataboutism gone wild: When are they going to investigate Hillarys collusion with the Russians? What about Bills affairs?
At one point, Jack Kingston said something so ridiculous in order to change the subject, the other panellists literally guffawed and Kingston wound up laughing along with them. Even hes not buying his own shtick anymore.
I think theyre finally realizing that trying to defend the indefensible is pointless. Doing so was once expected, it was once a challenge, it was once a means of conveying GOP unity behind the pResident but it is now pointless. The poll numbers are clear fewer and fewer people are buyin what theyre sellin every day including themselves.
I am awaiting a total meltdown from one of them any time now: bursting into tears, yelling, Youre right hes a fucking moron! Can we please talk about something else now please???
When your once-reliable spokes-whores cant come up with any response, regardless of how weak it may be, youre in trouble.

(42,334 posts)Oh well, they're poised to get their tax atrocity and all their RWNJ judges. I guess they don't care about defending him on "fake news" anymore.

(27,815 posts)... it doesn't change the fact that people who are literally paid to defend Trump in the media can't even fake doing it anymore.
The new poll numbers, with Trump at a 32% approval rating, was where they really lost it. In the past, they'd launch into, "Well, ya know, these numbers always fluctuate. They'll be back up by this time next week," etc.
But every question about those numbers were immediately met with, "But what about that time that Bill Clinton said ...," or, "Why did Obama once claim ..."
It's obvious they're running out of even "fake answers", and can't be bothered to fire-up the ol' propaganda catapult anymore.
Can't blame them. Imagine how exhausting it's been trying to come up with excuses for Trump every single day for almost a year. Even when Dubya was in office, the RWers kept up the facade for eight years. Trump's not even one year into it, and they're already burned out.

(42,334 posts)Of course, they never should have been saying on these "liberal" networks in the first place. IIRC, they were brought on because, during the campaign, no Republicans would support the Dotard on TV.

(27,815 posts)In Trump's first few weeks, it was "everything is going to be great with this prez, you'll see!"
That quickly became embarrassment: "Well, let me explain what covfefe probably means."
Then it was damage control: "What the prez really meant when he insulted the mayor of London is ..."
And now it's devolved into "can't we talk about something else instead?"
I'm awaiting Mueller's final report for a lot of reasons - one of them being watching the spokes-whores trying to spin it.
