Palestinian officials have threatened to snub a meeting between Mahmoud Abbas and the US vice-president, Mike Pence, as protests over the Trump administrations recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel rocked the region.
Jibril Rajoub, a senior official in President Abbass ruling Fatah party, said Mr Pence was unwelcome in Palestine and would not meet the Palestinian leader in Bethlehem on December 19. Such a meeting will not take place, he said.
Mr Pence was due to visit the region to test the reaction to President Trumps recognition of Jerusalem. Washington officials also confirmed that Mr Abbas had been invited to the White House to meet Mr Trump. They said that Mr Pences visit to the Middle East would go ahead as scheduled. - The Times
